11/6/2018 6:55 AM 0.53 M M M M Gentle rain falling at reading time. The rain started before nightfall yesterday evening, and appears to have continued all night.
11/7/2018 7:00 AM 0.10 0.4 0.04 M M Residential roads have very light coating of ice due to light snowfall melting on them, then the light melt-water coat freezing overnight. Sidewalks have some slick spots due to same effect. Snow arrived as a light burst of sleet around 4 PM. Snow flakes started falling about 6 PM, fell on and off in light bursts. Wind was strong, gusty, and biting yesterday late afternoon and evening.
11/8/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 7:00 AM local temperature: 22 F. Sky overcast.
11/9/2018 7:10 AM 0.08 0.9 0.08 M M Very light snowfall in progress at 7:10 AM this morning. Flakes are very small. Local temperature: 16F. Snow is too cold to be good packing snow. All lawns, sidewalks, and residential side streets are snow covered.
11/10/2018 7:00 AM T T T M M 5:45 AM station (local) temperature: 5F. 7:00 AM station temperature: 7F. 3:55 PM station temperature: 19F with very light small-size-flake snow fall just starting.
11/11/2018 7:30 AM 0.01 0.2 0.01 M M 7:55 AM local temperature at this station: 25F. Sky quite overcast and grey.
11/12/2018 6:50 AM T T T M M some light snow flurries at 6:50 AM - also seen yesterday evening. 6:50 AM local station temperature: 18 F. Sky: overcast with a little bottom layer cloud structure seen to the East.
11/13/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 7:00 AM local station temperature: 5F. Delightfully crisp clean cool clear dry early morning air; the mostly clear sky gives hope of a rare really sunny November day ahead. I think I remember some occasional snowflakes floating down yesterday, but nothing in the gauge this morning, so I'm reporting 0.00 inch precipitation instead of trace.
11/14/2018 6:55 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 6:55 AM local station temperature: 15F. Sky: Gorgeous crystal clear morning with orangish glow to the East. Flock of 200 ? birds - maybe water fowl - just flew over headed South in a silent randomly spaced group - definitely not geese. Moderate East wind blowing neighbor's chimney smoke to the West. Looks to be the setup for a second brilliantly sunny day - rare for normally cloudy November.
11/15/2018 6:40 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 6:40 AM local station temperatures: 26F. Sky appears clear or mostly clear.
11/16/2018 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M 7:00 AM local station temperature: 26F. Sky overcast - rather dark. The bit of precipitation in the bottom of the main gauge cylinder was a combination of ice and droplets of water. Some raindrops noticed on West facing window yesterday evening just after dark. I suspect the precipitation fell as rain and then some of it froze. Measurement made with a triple-beam balance: weighing cylinder with its precipitation, then cleaning out the ice and water and drying it with a paper towel, reweighing, and taking the difference, which was 2.6 g. 2.0 g = 0.01 inch of precipitation, exactly. So, if we were to report to the 3rd decimal, it would be 0.013 inch of precipitation.
11/17/2018 11:59 PM 0.01 M M M M It was snowfall overnight - had melted a few places on sidewalks and then froze - almost fell when after crossing a length of ok sidewalk I hit an icy patch at night - I saw serious icy patches on roads down in Savage area seen about 9 AM despite road salting on some lanes - very grateful for the solid grip my blizzak winter tires give my car.
11/18/2018 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 8:15 AM local station temperature: 7F. Another gorgeous bright sunny delightfully crisp Minneapolis late fall / early winter morning.
11/19/2018 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 0.00 7:15 AM local station temperature: 15F. Sky - moderate grey, completely and uniformly overcast. While I am reported 0.00" of melted total snow and ice on ground, it is true there are a few small patches of snow here and there on lawns. However, almost all of the lawn area is snow free, and the sidewalks and residential streets here are base - completely snow and ice free.
11/20/2018 7:10 AM T T T M M A small number of very fluffy snow flakes in the bottom of the gauge this morning. 7:10 AM local station temperature: 11F. Beautiful mostly clear morning. A few stunning horizon-to-horizon contrails glow white with sunlight - contrasting against pale blue sky.

11/22/2018 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Saw enough sparse flurries now and then yesterday that I thought there would be something in the gauge cylinder. Nothing. Noticed a little thin ice on the driveway yesterday evening has disappeared overnight - maybe the air is dry enough that ice and snow sublimed away overnight. 5:00 AM local station temperature: 26F.
11/27/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 7:00 AM local station temperature: 12 F. No readings 23, 24, 25, 26 November 2018 - I was out of town I had moved the main gauge cylinder into the house to avoid collecting possible (forecast) rain, which would possibly then freeze (forecast) and perhaps break the cylinder. Thus there is also no multi-day reading.
11/28/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 7:00 AM local station temperature: 15 F. "Jack Frost" covers the outside of the gauge tube in "artistic" patterns.
11/29/2018 7:00 AM 0.20 1.9 0.20 M M Beautiful fluffy "dry" snow on ground this morning. Just barely fully buries the grass which was bare yesterday morning. Sidewalks not slippery - just snow covered. Residential street also not slippery - also just snow covered, but that will change as cars pack it down and people spin their wheels, thus "polishing" it. Temporary situation - forecast temperatures suggest it will all melt in the next few days. 7:00 AM local station temperature: 24F.
11/30/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 7:00 AM local station temperature: 28F. A good amount of yesterday morning's approximately 2 inch snow fall still on local residential streets and sidewalks - except where plowed or shoveled. That is, temperature high of roughly 32F yesterday did very little to diminish the amount of snow present.
12/1/2018 7:00 AM T T T M M A sprinkling of snow in the bottom of the gauge cylinder this morning - about like the amount of sugar sprinkled on top of a sugar cookie. 7:00 AM local station temperature: 26 F. Sky overcast.
12/2/2018 6:15 AM 0.18 3.0 M M M "snow swatting" not done correctly - realized after reviewing COCORAHS snow reporting instructions. Actual melted equivalent is definitely higher; could be as much as twice (0.36 inch) 6:15 AM local station temperature: 31F. Windy with strong gusts which send my 50 foot tall open grown white pine's branches gyrating rather wildly. No tree damage, however. A delightful snowfall for kids - the most awesome packing type. Neighbor's kids have a snow brick form and have an outstanding fort partially built. The new snow is not slippery to walk on. That probably will change when it gets packed down and freezes to "snow-ice" later today. No drifting despite the strong, gusty wind - I believe the "warm" snow is so sticky that it locks in place where it falls and cannot be moved by the wind to make drifts. About 2/3 of the snow fell approximately between 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM; that would be 2.0 of the 3.0 inches, and 0.12 inch of the water content. During that period, visibility was reduced to about 1,000 feet, based on not being able to see past about 1.5 blocks, when normally I can see the end of that street 2 blocks away.
12/3/2018 8:30 AM 0.01 T M M M 8:30 AM local station temperature: 24 F. Sky Overcast. Reported 0.01 inch water equivalent is from the weight of snow in the gauge cylinder this morning. Snowboard had very little on it - ("T") - maybe the wind swept away the relatively dry snowfall which was the tail end of yesterday's 3.0 inch snow (depth, not water equivalent).

Sky clear - Jupiter (I believe) shines super brightly directly south maybe 60 degrees above horizon; sky is getting too bright for the stars, and other planets (if any) to show up. Thought that was Jupiter - decided it is too bright and too low in sky for Jupiter - binocular view, kind of shaky, suggests it is crescent shaped, which would be Venus. Much loss of snow pack due to warm temperatures lately. Lots of bare spots on lawns.

Local residential roads are covered with light layer of frozen slush with some snow stuck in it on top. 1/27/2019 9:15 AM 0.03 0.5 M M M Local station temperature at 9:15 AM: -5 F. Saw -11 F about 7:30 this morning. Brilliant sunshine, crystal clear sky at 9:15 AM. Snow started about 7:30 AM yesterday morning. It made the roads including the interstate roads in the Twin Cities, Minnesota rather "greasy" - something I experienced driving on those interstate roads about 11:30 AM. It was too cold for the salt to be very effective.
1/28/2019 8:00 AM 0.44 3.6 M M M 9:00 AM local station temperature: 5F. Some drifting of snow; 3.6 inch depth was determined by measuring 10 or so places and taking the measurement which seemed to be the most representative of the general snow-fall. 1:30 AM measurement (gauge cylinder only) 0.31" water equivalent. By 8:00 AM, another 0.13" water equivalent was in the gauge cylinder. Snowfall appears to be about half of the roughly 8 inches in the NWS local forecast about noon yesterday. Temperature during the snowfall also appears to have been lower - roughly 6F compared to maybe 9 F forecast - this suggests the cold front advanced further than the forecast model predicted, thus moving the heavier snowfall further South. I think.
1/29/2019 11:00 AM 0.01 0.1 M M M 11:00 AM local station temperature: -6 F. Wind is starting to pick up. Brilliant sunshine - enhanced by reflection off the brilliant white recent snowfall.
1/30/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M At 7:00 AM local station temperature was -28 F. At the time of this writing (9:10 AM) the sky is stunningly clear - of a clarity not seen in a long time. There is brilliant sunshine enhanced by reflection off the recent extra "white" snow fall. I think, since the snow fell at 5F temperature, it contained less "dirt" than usual. Even the local residential streets are mostly white - while fully plowed now, there is a thin layer of white icy snow on their surfaces, and the City of Minneapolis Road crew has laid down a little sand for traction. I never thought I would again see such a delightfully cold January morning in my lifetime due to global warming - yet that alternative phrase: "global climate change" is more apt for the average person's thinking this morning. Is this an example of "no global warming?" Well, what portion of the earth's surface is the lower 48 US states? It is LESS THAN 3%. THEREFORE, what is going on in the rest of the GLOBE is 30 times "bigger" than what is going on in the lower 48 US states. There IS STILL GLOBAL WARMING - RIGHT NOW. We need to understand what GLOBAL means - one region, despite seeming "big" (the lower 48 US states in this case) - is a relatively TINY portion of the Earth's surface - roughly 1/30th of it - and GLOBAL means TAKE THE AVERAGE OVER THE ENTIRE GLOBE - temperature in many locations needed in that average, BEARING IN MIND that about 2/3 of the globe is OCEAN - so 2/3 of the measurements in that average need to come from the oceans. Check out the temperatures in the rest of the globe. I believe, for example, Australia is suffering through the hottest and driest conditions in a long time - maybe ever - major water shortages in their large cities.... RIGHT NOW. The key word is GLOBAL.

Visibility estimate: 500 feet (not quite 1 Minneapolis City block) ICE HAZARD: Ground under sidewalks and streets is still well below freezing temperature (well below 32 F) due to recent very cold weather with one night temperature of -28 F. Thus, melt-water flowing off roofs and sunward-facing (sloped) lawns/landscapes/retaining walls/pavement is refreezing where it flows over paved surfaces. ALSO the fog has frozen to the surface of clear pavements, such as sidewalks.
2/4/2019 7:35 AM 0.09 M M M M Incredibly slippery sidewalks this morning. EVERYTHING is ice coated. Local residential streets seem better - mixture of thin layer of slush-sand-salt is keeping them driveable - sort of. Most pedestrians are avoiding the sidewalks by walking in the streets. Local station temperature at 7:00 AM: -11 F. DELIGHTFUL NORMAL MINNEAPOLIS WINTER WEATHER! A 6.4 inch powder snow fall followed by winds whipping in from the NW cooling us down to -11 F at 7 AM this morning - a "blast from the past" - I thought I'd never again see winter weather like this - Minneapolis winter weather that I remember from circa 1980-1995 - the kind that gave Minnesota the "Minne-snowta" reputation. I'm thinking about going snow-shoeing and xc skiing - xc ski tracks on the sidewalks yesterday before the neighborhood started removing the snow. The new Minneapolis City policy of actually ENFORCING the remove-snow-from-sidewalks within 24 hours of end of storm has resulted in COMPLETE compliance here - you can actually easily walk in the neighborhood this winter - WONDERFUL.

Temperature at data entry time (8:30 AM) at this local station is 41 F. Flooding: due, I think, to unusually deep ground frost level, low areas which normally thaw out and drain through the local very sandy soil are still holding water this morning. A number of locals, including me, are running pumps to prevent water from low parts of yard getting into basements and garages. Since I am prepared for this, it is not a problem for me - just an inconvenience - had to take time to set up the pump and its output hose (about 100 feet), and electric line to pump (elevated above the snow and thoroughly electrical-taped at junctions). I periodically turn it on when water level is high enough - on my 3rd 30-min on-session right now in past 20 hours. A number of volunteers, including me, have removed snow and ice from the local street storm drains and they are draining well. I helps a lot that the rain has been gentle - never saw more than one slot of the roughly 8 slot street drain grate taking water - it's well within the drainage capability of the system.
3/15/2019 5:30 AM 0.50 T M M M Light rain all day yesterday. Total 7:30 AM to 9:00 PM: 0.44 inch. 0.06 more fell up to 5:30 AM. Local station temperature at 6:00 AM: 29 F. Sidewalks and streets have thin layers of hard ice where melt water has frozen. Precipitation in the gauge cylinder was hard frozen ice in the bottom. There is just a dusting of snow here and there - not uniform - I think much of it landed, then melted. Flooding restricted to low areas where frost seals the ground; these areas, where they impact property (get into basements) have been pumped out by the residents - including me. Considerable reduction of accumulated snow and street ice - perhaps 33% of local residential streets now sort of ice free (what looks like clear pavement is often covered with "black ice" due to freeze of melt water overnight) Overall - a loss of maybe half of a rather impressive winter snow accumulation in just 2 days - and the low rate of rainfall, overcast skies (no direct strong sunlight) and relatively low temperatures (35 to 43 F) prevented most serious flooding from occurring.

4/5/2019 4:30 AM T M M M M Raindrops noticed on dry pavement about 5:30 PM yesterday. Gauge cylinder has a sprinkling of rain drops inside this morning - but not even 1 drop pours out.
4/6/2019 6:50 AM 0.78 M M M M Light rain in progress at 6:50 AM; fell overnight starting sometime after 8 PM (don't know when). Fog with mist present most of yesterday morning; while driving periodically had to swipe with wipers. Only a trace in the gauge cylinder yesterday afternoon, however. Flooding: A neighborhood block with very low backyards has standing water in the backyards; the neighbors are pumping it out; this block commonly has such ponding; I think it is unusual after just 0.78 inch of rain, but I also think the ground is saturated due to recent melt of record February snow, and that area is just a little above the lake called Bde Maka Ska, so the water table is likely high. It is also an area with a lot of organics in the soil - commonly called "peat" soil.
4/7/2019 6:00 AM 0.17 M M M M Reading is since 6:50 AM yesterday morning. Reading was also 0.17 inch at 5:15 PM. Thus, no measurable rain has fallen overnight.
4/8/2019 4:30 AM 0.03 M M M M Rain measurement is since 7:00 AM yesterday. Light Cirrus? clouds throughout sky but big-dipper constellation is visible a tad NW of directly overhead at 4:30 AM. Local station temperature at 4:30 AM: 42 F. Lots of dew on the grass.

4/11/2019 6:45 AM 0.91 8.0 M M M Due to intense wind with even stronger gusts overnight snowfall depth is, I think, plus or minus 2 inches - drifting - measurements in what seemed reasonably flat snow varied from 7 to 10 inches. This morning, measurement to 0.1 inch is meaningless. Reading at 6:15 PM was 5.6 inches snow depth, 0.39 inch water content. Thus 0.52 more inch water content fell overnight, with maybe 2.4 inches more depth. Walk was shoveled after the 6:15 PM reading last night; shoveling this morning on the same walk was annoying because of the visible water content in the lower part of the snow (translucent look); and the snow tended to stay on the shovel when "thrown" making it necessary to frequently clear the shovel by banging it on the walk.
4/12/2019 7:00 AM 0.40 1.0 M M M Accumulation of "new snow" value is iffy in my opinion - I think it is +/- 0.5 inch. The "snow" is actually mostly sleet. Precipitation in the last 24 hours has been snow, grapple, sleet, and rain, mixed - I think mostly sleet. Gauge cylinder contents were mostly liquid water covered with a layer of floating icy stuff - sleet, I think. Some of the sleet was tan colored - interesting and possibly worrysome. I measured 0.5 inch of it in cross section which deposited itself on top of plastic garbage bin. MPR reported the tan is from West Texas dust storm dust - dust so thick I-10 had to be closed for a while due to black-out conditions. This dust was whipped up into the stratosphere where roughly 125 mph jet stream wind carried it over Minneapolis, roughly an 8 hour trip - where it mixed into the falling sleet, making it tan. The dust plume was visible in satellite images. The worrysome part - what else was in that dust? Plant fungus spores, or bacteria, or virus? One can see how, for example, wheat-rust fungus (if present) can be transported 1,000 miles in just 8 hours...... There are now wheat-rust fungi for which, I believe, no wheat variety has resistance - present in Asia, I think.....
4/13/2019 7:00 AM 0.08 T M M M 7:00 AM local station temperature: 31 F. Snow on ground has refrozen; especially where squished down in footprints and tire prints; those locations are now ice, well adhered to the pavement. Precipitation total (liquid) at 6:00 PM was also 0.08 inches; at that time, all the precipitation in the gauge cylinder was liquid. All the precipitation was observed to fall as snow, which promptly melted in contact with the gauge cylinder. The snow board, painted white, had no accumulation. If the board had been chilled (refrigerated), there would be an accumulation of new snow to report. While flurries continued past 6:00 PM, the total in liquid water was just "T" (trace) - less then 0.01 inch liquid. Saturday morning sky: light overcast.

4/22/2019 6:25 AM T M M M M A sprinkle yesterday with rather dark skies during it. Enough to wet the street, but just a drop in the gauge tube this morning. Sunny almost all of yesterday, and rather warm - in the '70s F. This morning at 6:25 AM: Thunderstorms in area - lightning and grumbly thunder several times per minute. First few drops of rain have just started to fall.
4/23/2019 5:50 AM 0.46 M M M M Measurement is since 6:25 AM yesterday, which is when the first few raindrops of approaching thunderstorm fell. This morning sky is beautifully clear. Yesterday the thunderstorm event produced only 0.13 inch of rain (measured at 7:40 AM) - several lightnings per minute, with mostly grumbly (not loud) thunder. 0.46 inch is the total measurement as of 6:40 PM. If any rain fell overnight, it was just a trace. Local station temperature this morning is 32F - right on the edge of freezing. I'm hoping the parsley, mint, and basil plants I have in the ground are tough enough to survive this without damage. The tomato plant is inside, transferred to a larger pot, and awaits consistently warm (55 F or more) night temperatures.

5/31/2019 5:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 5:30 AM local station temperature: 60 F. Later, at 7:50 AM: feels humid. Sky hazy with Northern Alberta Canada forest fire smoke, but not as hazy as yesterday. Northern Alberta forest fire site reports 170 square miles burned so far (100,000 acres) - not contained - 3 major fires burning on Eastern side. There is a much smaller fire in Northern Saskatchewan - considered contained, but not out yet. Poetic justice that the smoke comes here - Alberta oil tar sands are mined and pumped in pipelines directly to the 2 refineries in the Twin Cities - the big Koch owned "Flint Hills" refinery and the much smaller one in North? St Paul - all the gasoline being turned into CO2 and water by Twin Cities automobiles & trucks comes from that tar sands oil, and is contributing extra to global warming - hence so many forest fires in Alberta, and somewhat Saskatchewan, with the smoke "getting" us.
6/1/2019 7:00 AM 0.13 M M M M 7:00 AM local station temperature: 55 F. Sky lightly overcast. Rain came in 2 little bouts - one with large drops on a moderate wind from the West, before midnight - possibly 10:30 PMish, possibly later; the other a little lightning storm with good rainfall for a few minutes, about 3:45 AM. Storm might have had 10 lightning flashes total or so. Now, with 55 F or so outside, I've opened the windows to let out the heat from yesterday's 90 F temperatures - but it is very humid air - will run the dehumidifier after the cooling is done. Hopefully the rain washed the Alberta forest fire smoke out of the sky - but cool air means it probably comes from Canada on wind from the North, which may well be bringing in more smoke.

Sky looks to be pretty clear, with some continued Northern Alberta Province, Canada, forest fire smoke. wildfire.alberta.ca reports out of control wildfires have increased to 8, with 24 total wildfires in progress. In all of 2019 so far, 2,200 square miles of alberta forest have burned up. That is the equal to the area of Minnesota counties Hennepin, Anoka, Dakota, Ramsey, and Washington, combined. It is about 1% of the area of Alberta province. Alberta has about 3 times the area of the state of Minnesota.

7/8/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M At 7:30 AM local station temperature was 70 F. Sky sunny with some white stuff above - a kind of haze? Forest fire smoke from Canada? Before global warming, I don't ever remember being plagued by forest fire smoke from Canada the way we are now EVERY summer - and even in the SPRING. Global warming is resulting in the Canadian conifer forests burning down - HUGE swaths burned up ALREADY in 2019 - equal in area to all the 7 counties in the Mpls-St.Paul Metro area. Tragedy.
7/9/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M At 6:00 AM local station temperature was 71 F. Sky sunny with Canadian forest fire smoke haze. Last night, maybe around midnight, woke up because "downwind of campfire" smoke smell had permeated into my house despite all the windows being closed. It is considerably less smokey smelling outside this morning.
