Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2018 7:00 AM 0.14 0.0 M 0.0 M A very GLOOMY period, with nearly non-stop drizzle and a high temp of only 50.
10/2/2018 7:00 AM 0.04 0.0 M 0.0 M More drizzle and light rain...most of which fell on the AM of the 1st, but is ongoing again at ob-time. Measurable rain total for past 3 days = 0.23".
10/3/2018 7:00 AM T 0.0 M 0.0 M Intermittent light drizzle persisted from ob-time on the 2nd until around 230PM before ending.
10/4/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M
10/5/2018 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 M 0.0 M Light rain occurred a few times during the afternoon/evening of the 4th, but most all of this 0.02" fell in passing showers between 12-2PM.
10/6/2018 7:00 AM T 0.0 M 0.0 M Very light drizzle was observed on the afternoon of the 5th.
10/7/2018 7:00 AM T 0.0 M 0.0 M Very light drizzle at ob-time, with steadier rain about to begin per radar data.
10/8/2018 7:45 AM 0.60 0.0 M 0.0 M This was Day 1 of an anticipated 3-day rain event: Of the 0.60" total, 0.52" fell between ob-time and Noon on the 7th. Most of the other 0.08" fell between midnight and ob-time this morning.
10/9/2018 8:00 AM 0.75 0.0 M 0.0 M Day 2 of a 3-day rain event: Of the 0.75" total, it was a fairly even split, with a little less than half falling between ob-time and noon on the 8th, and a little more than half falling between 2AM and ob-time this morning (with periods of light rain/drizzle also occurring in between these two primary time frames). This brings the 48-hour total up to 1.35".
10/10/2018 7:00 AM 1.18 0.0 M 0.0 M This was truly the "grand finale" of a notable 3-day rain event. It literally rained almost all day on the 9th, especially from ob-time until around 9PM, after which it tapered off to occasional sprinkles/drizzle late in the night before ending completely. Between the non-stop rain, gusty north winds and daytime high temp of only 45 degrees, the 9th was truly a "miserable" early-October day. The final, 72-hour storm total amount was 2.53", which actually fell a bit short of originally-forecasted expectations. Nonetheless, this was enough rain to bring area harvest to a screeching/muddy halt.
10/11/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Based on nearby obs, there might have been a touch of very light drizzle on the AM of the 10th, but cannot confirm for this location so will report 0.00.
10/12/2018 7:30 AM 0.10 0.0 M 0.0 M Two completely separate rounds of chilly light rain overnight for a total of 0.10": the first one (and primary one) mainly 1AM-230AM, and then the second one mainly between 630AM and the 730AM ob-time.
10/13/2018 7:00 AM 0.06 0.0 M 0.0 M Off-and-on, chilly light rain occurred between ob-time on the 12th and roughly 11AM before ending completely (0.06" during this period).
10/14/2018 7:45 AM 0.13 0.1 M T M The vast majority of this 0.13" consisted of passing rain showers between 630PM-9PM on the 13th. However, the early AM hours brought the first wintry precip of the season, with drizzle/light rain gradually transitioning to snow pellets shortly before ob-time. At ob-time, grassy surfaces were barely beginning to turn white, and will call it a "weak" 0.1" of snow accumulation with light snow ongoing.

12/1/2018 6:30 AM 1.82 T M T M What a remarkable rain event for so late in the year! A cold, light to moderate rain started around 6PM on the 30th and persisted through the night before changing to snow shortly before ob-time. This totaled around 2"...2) Round 2 focused mainly 10PM-4AM, and was more of a prolonged steady light snow, totaling around 1.3". In between both primary snow rounds, there were often flurries. SIDE NOTES: Given various factors including that this snow fell in two rounds, exhibited modest blowing thanks to winds commonly 15-25+ MPH, and that there was plenty of "old snow" already on the ground, this was the most challenging/lowest-confidence snow measurement of the winter-so-far. Although am reporting my 24-hour totals as 0.10" liquid and 3.3" of snow, suspect that liquid is likely a bit low as it is only from gauge catch (had no good place to do a core sample). Finally, the 7" snow depth sets a new "record" for the 2.5 year history of this station.

SIDE NOTE: According to the NWS, Hastings airport snapped a 22-DAY STREAK of at-or-below freezing temperatures this morning. 3/12/2019 8:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M 1.0 M The very beginning stages of a well-advertised, 3-day precipitation event got underway about an hour before ob-time with a period of drizzle and steady light rain. Regarding the 1" snow depth: lingering snow cover across the property is not uniform, with roughly half now bare ground, and the other half covered in snow up to several inches deep. Thus, the 1" reported is a compromise of the extremes.
3/13/2019 8:00 AM 0.22 0.0 M T M The vast majority of this 0.22" consisted of off-an-on showers and weak thunderstorms between 1AM and ob-time. SIDE NOTE 1: Although distant thunder was heard several weeks ago, this was the first official thunderstorm activity of 2019 in Hastings itself...SIDE NOTE 2: Today ends an impressive 25-DAY STREAK of having at least 1" of snow depth...by far the longest run in the 2.5 year history of this station.
3/14/2019 9:00 AM 0.80 2.0 M 2.0 M Part 3 (and the most significant) of a 3-day precipitation event: A little over half of this 0.80 fell as rain between ob-time and 1PM on the 13th. Following a several-hour afternoon lull (including partial clearing), steady rain moved in again late afternoon and continued into the night. Around 1AM, rain transitioned to wind-whipped snow behind a powerful cold front. Snow peaked in intensity between 430-700AM, during which time legitimate blizzard conditions were often realized with sustained winds around 35 MPH/frequent gusts around 50 MPH. Light snow continued at ob-time. The 2" of snowfall is a best-estimate given the winds. SIDE NOTE: The 3-day precipitation total of 1.05" was respectable, but several counties especially north-northwest of here had over 2". Due to an unusually-dire combination of heavy rain, melting snow, mostly-frozen ground and thick river ice, this event prompted DEVASTATING/HISTORIC FLOODING across much of central/north central/eastern Nebraska (including the Loup/Elkhorn/Platte/Niobrara rivers), which peaked in severity during the following few days. Fortunately, flooding impacts in the immediate Hastings area were quite minimal.
3/15/2019 7:00 AM T T M 1.0 M Lingering light, wind-blown snow persisted for a few hours after ob-time on the 14th before ending completely. In reality, snow accumulation might have been a bit more than a trace, but really no way of telling given the wind and essentially nothing in the gauge. This morning, the 1" of snow depth is perhaps a bit generous, as 90% of the yard has no more than 0.5" of depth, but with some decent 1-2" ft. deep drifts.
3/16/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M This is a "weak" lingering trace of snow depth, as 90+% of the yard is snow-free, but with limited drifts as deep as 1-2 ft. remaining.

6/21/2019 7:00 AM 0.81 0.0 M 0.0 M All of this 0.81" fell between 1-6 AM, the majority of which fell during two primary linear mesoscale convective systems (MCS), with lighter stratiform rain in between them. Round 1: This MCS raced through mainly 110-130 AM, and produced damaging winds. Although was not home to personally observe, a reliable report from there suggested several minutes of at least 50-60 MPH winds, likely peaking at least 65 MPH (many branches and some entire trees downed in the greater Hastings area). Round 2: Following a few hours of stratiform rain and a brief non-severe storm in the wake of the first MCS, another MCS blew through 5-530 AM. Although not as severe as Round 1, this one featured peak gusts at least 50 MPH. SIDE NOTE: In Hastings, this was arguably the most damaging thunderstorm event to trees in 5 years.
