1/20/2019 7:00 AM 1.37 1.0 0.41 0.5 0.23 35 degrees, cloudy with light fog seeming to be building. Today's reading is complicated. Snow began at 7:00 p.m. and continued to 10:00 p.m. Snow accumulation at that point was 1.0" on the ground with water content of .35" in the tube and .41 on the ground. The tube was emptied at that point. At 7:00 a.m. this morning, the tube had an additional 1.02" of water, while the ground had snow/slush of .5" with .23" of water. So I am giving a total tube total combining the two measurements of .35 + 1.02 = 1.37". The ground total is this morning's snow/slush measurement of .23". Obviously the rain melted much of the snow and the water ran off into the ground. So you will be best to use the tube measurements of water, since they are very accurate. The snowfall on the ground from last night of 1.0" is very accurate, but the ground water is obviously not accurate. The program would not allow me to save the total precipitation of 1.37" of water because it was larger than the 1.0" of snowfall!!! This morning the tube had an additional .24" of rain and the ground was covered with 1.0" of frozen slushy snow with .84" of total accumulation. So altogether, the tube collected .55+.24 = .79". We had a maximum depth of snow at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday at 1.5" with .54" of water. By this morning at 7:00 a.m. the snow had compressed to 1.0" of very icy snow, but it had a total water content of .84". I shall use my maximum values for the 'new' and 'total' figures. I thought it odd that the total tube collection was less than the total ground, so I took two more ground samples which, while the depth was 1.0" on all three, I got water readings of .96", .84" and .61"! I can't explain this, but I chose to go with the one closest to the tube reading - .84". This morning the tube reading was .45" while ground total depth was down to .5" of snow. I took two readings of ground water, both at locations with a .5" depth of snow and ice. One on the ground read .31" and one on my deck read .61". I often seem to get this discrepancy and in this case I am going with the .61" on my deck since it more closely resembles the combined totals from the tube of .25+.45 = .70" of overall precipitation. My 'new snow' depth reading will be from last night when it stopped snowing but the tube reading will be from this morning.
