Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy, 54° with heavy dew (3 drops). 24hr: 46 [yesterday a.m.'s reset /61° Instead of rushing to bring in plants with frosty weather on the doorstep, this year I'm potting up to first try and dry out soggy plants that I'll be wintering over indoors. Wet season: July = 9.39", August = 12.26", and September = 6.92"
10/2/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Fog, 60° 24hr: 54 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /67°
10/3/2018 7:15 AM 1.86 M M M M Clear, 59° with a beautiful crescent moon in the East. 24hr: 59/70° Very impressive thunderstorm last night! Rain began later in the afternoon, followed by blasting rain, lightning and thunder in the evening. This storm had the longest peals of rolling thunder continually sounding around usthat I've ever heard, and for several hours, but thankfully, the tornado warning was cancelled. Basement pump back on.
10/4/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly sunny, 54° with moderate dew. 24hr: 50/64° Putting pots of plants inside the cold frame to try and DRY THEM OFF before bringing inside to overwinter. Soggy season has caused foliar diseases to flourish.
10/5/2018 8:00 AM 0.07 M M M M Sunny, 52° 24hr: 52/68°
10/6/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy, 57° 24hr: 52 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /61° There were 2 drops in the gauge this morning; not sure if it's condensation or a "T" of rain. Decided to report it as dew and 0.00"
10/7/2018 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Overcast, 64° 24hr: 57/64° Almost all day and evening yesterday a very fine mist fell. Not so much "fell" as hung in the air all day.
10/8/2018 8:00 AM T M M M M Misting, 61° 24hr: 60/73° 4 drops in the gauge; a very fine mist can be felt against the skin, not exactly "falling" but it's like being inside of a cloud. Can't see the ridgeline on the western side of the lake. Elevation: 1,061.
10/9/2018 8:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Misty, 63° 24hr: 59/64° Fourth day like living inside of a cloud.
10/10/2018 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Cloudy, humid, 66° 24hr: 63 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /69° Still running A/C at night --in mid October?
10/11/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast and very humid, 67° 24hr: 65/73° A single drop in the gauge, likely dew.
10/12/2018 8:00 AM 0.99 M M M M Cloudy, windy, 50° 24hr: 50/69° Precip right up to the top of the inner gauge. With the changing airmass, maybe we'll finally get around to Fall around here.
10/13/2018 8:00 AM 0.13 M M M M Raining, 43° 24hr: 43/54°
10/14/2018 8:00 AM 0.15 M M M M Mostly cloudy, 40° 24hr: 37/49° Nothing like a Frost Warning to get a gardener with a sinus infection movin' !! Harvested all of the remaining pole beans, cherry tomatoes; covered the herbs for future harvest; sank tender perenials in pots into the garden beds; and brought in the last of the bulbs: amarylis and callas. Cut off all the dahlia flowers and have a giant vase on the table ahead of Thursday's predicted freeze.

I had not expected the change over to happen that fast, so I didn't get out to get a snow depth measurement before the snow was compressed.
1/21/2019 8:00 AM 0.13 T M 2.4 M Cloudy, windy, -4° 24hr: -4°/33° Most of the precip following OBS was freezing rain which turned the snow cover into slush. Storm ended with a few rounds of snow flurries and wind knocking chuncks of ice out of the trees. This morning the snowpack is rock solid and the fallen ice looks like broken glass scattered everwhere. Needed to bring out a screwdriver to poke holes in the "snow"/cement on the ground to read depth. Impossible to get a core. And cracked the outter gauge tapping it to release it from the post! Glad I have an extra.
1/22/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 2.8 M Sunny, 5° and calm. 1/31/2019 8:00 AM 0.02 0.4 0.03 3.8 M Sunny, -6° 24hr: -6°/26° The snow sqall that came through made depth measurements difficult; the snow was very heavy and blowing very hard. It's surprising that the gauge 'catch' was lower than the melted snow-board, but at times during the snow storm it was blowing sideways. -6° sure catches your attention! 5.82" total precip for January and only 8 days had snow on the ground. I'm noticing some perennials 'heaving' and will have to push them back in the ground once it thaws.

The ice layer this morning is impressive; it supports the weight of our 50lb dog, and was close to supporting my weight. Very difficult to pierce that ice layer for measurements, or to even get the gauge off the post. Black ice on the steps and walkways that we shoveled last evening. Dramatic difference between the SWE of the gauge and the snowboard. Gauge measurements required scraping down the thick inner layer of ice inside the tube.

Precip began approx 7:30pm as snow flurries but almost immediately changed over to sleet and freezing rain with temperatures hovering at 32°/33° Periods of rain later mixed with that. 100% snow coverage before this storm is now topped off with a 'fresh' layer of ice. Difficult to get the gauge off the post. Snow/ice depth ranges from a "T" in the footprints and walks to 1.1" across most of the yard, so I'm reporting 0.5"
2/19/2019 8:00 AM 0.02 0.1 0.02 0.3 M Sunny, 17° 24hr: 16/33° At approx 12:30pm a doosey of a sleet squall came through despositing a fresh layer of ice and some graupel pellets on the existing snowpack. This morning, despite using the pointed corner of a sturdy metal ruler, I couldn't poke through the snowpack. Measurement was made from a slab from our metal, in-line roof that hadn't already slided off; lifted the edge to get it moving, and after it crashed on the ground, I measured one of the shattered pieces 'sideways' for a depth of 0.3" Beautiful watching the almost full Snow Moon last night with all of the snow/ice on the ground making the night so bright.

But it's still almost 100%; but now the shoveled paths are widening some, the tops of the rocks edging the gardens are showing, and the snow/ice is melting away from the base of the large maple. The sap will be running soon! The snowcover is also melting back from the SE side of the house 12" - 18" even though we never got above freezing yesterday.
2/21/2019 8:00 AM 0.76 1.3 0.46 1.5 M Overcast, 30° with light fog. Everything is encased in ice, but not the radial kind of the last storm, but the kind of ice that is thicker and drips rows of icicles off all of the trees and wires. 24hr: 17/30° Snow changed over to sleet/freezing rain mid afternoon. New snow measured then = 1.2" Total snow on the ground is an estimate; I can't punch through the ice layer under this fresh snow. Still couldn't get to the earth beneath, but the average of three samples = 0.9" (That is 0.01" more than yesterday without any additional snow, so the "representative" sites were a little different or the pre-chipping with a screwdriver contributed. Still 100% coverage. Lots of birdsong this morning.

2/25/2019 8:00 AM 0.02 T M T M As my son would say, "It was a sub-optimal day." The winds brought down power lines and a transformer at 3:50am and we were without power for 14 hours. Temp @ OBS = 28°; 24hr: 28/40° Still 2/3 snowcover on the ground this morning, but compressed to approx 0.03" of ice, so I'm reporting "T" Some snow flurries right before OBS time.
2/26/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 T M T M Sunny, 19° with winds down to an occasional breeze. 24hr: 18/35° High winds yesterday brought down electric wires and a tranformer down the block at 3:50am; we were without power for 14 hours. Today will be clean up of many small and medium sized limbs down and retrieving things that were blown around. Even some things that were tied down! Persistant ice layer remains --covering 2/3 of the ground with approx 1/4" of solid ice. Impossible to poke through it for an accurate reading of depth, much less take a core sample.

3/1/2019 7:30 AM 0.19 2.4 0.20 2.4 M Overcast, 21° 24hr: 20/35° Under this new 2.4" layer of snow the yard is stil approx 60% ice-shield, which I can't measure. From 0" in the footprints and base of trees out to approx 0.25" densely compressed ice every where else. So the Total Snow and Ice on Ground is slightly under-reported. February Total Precip = 3.18"; Total Snow = 3.7" February 2019 was the Winter of Ice Storms! Last night's storm was all snow.
3/2/2019 4:00 PM 0.39 3.5 M M M Away overnight, so the temperature readings were taken at the time of this report (4pm). Our son measured the snow here & swapped out the gauge for us at regular OBS time of 8am; noted flurries were still occuring. The side yard was a lake with rain shooting straight off the roof, bypassing the gutters and leaders. Lots of things blown all around the yard. This morning approx 1/4 of the yard has 'snowcover:' it's the impenetrible ice layer that has been underneath all of the snow for weeks. 7/25/2019 8:00 AM 0.10 M M M M Hazy sun, 61° 24hr: 58/74° This summer I lost the entire row of radicchio: the heads rotted on the vine with the constant rain. Glad I grow leaf lettuce varieties! Powdery mildew is very bad this year.
7/26/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 61° with heavy dew. 24hr: 57/76° One drop, likely dew, and a dead Japanese beetle in the gauge this morning.
7/27/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, 63° with some dew. Not even a drop of dew today, but enough to fog up the gauge. 24hr: 59/77°
7/28/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, a bit of dew, 68° 24hr: 63 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /80° Another Japanese beetle in the gauge.
7/29/2019 8:00 AM T M M M M Sunny, 66° 24hr: 63 [prior day reset] /82° Not sure if the moisture in the gauge was precip or dew. Wasn't even a drop, but we did hear thunder all around us last night around 10pm, although I didn't hear rain. Cleaned the inner tube; it was getting pretty grungy.
7/30/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy sun, still, with some dew, 68° 24hr: 66/84° Up here 80°s are the 90°s of lower elevation more densely populated parts of NJ. They are not common. So far this July we've had 13 days of 80° or higher.
7/31/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Partly cloudy, 66° 24hr: 64/83° Total rain for July = 8.26" and total days of 80° or higher = 14.
8/1/2019 8:00 AM 0.08 M M M M Hazy sun, 65° with heavy dew. 24hr: 63/77° Cloudy day yesterday with the first bands of sprinkles coming through between 2 and 3pm. A lot of rolling thunder in the distance from then into the evening.
8/2/2019 8:00 AM T M M M M Partly cloudy, 65° with some dew. 24hr: 61/79° Two drops in the gauge + another dead beetle. Not sure if these are raindrops or dew.
8/3/2019 8:00 AM T M M M M Mostly cloudy, 68° 24hr: 63/75° Nothing in the gauge this morning but there was a very brief period of a few, large drops around noon. A lot of dark clouds in the area and even a round of distant, rolling thunder, but no more rain.
8/4/2019 8:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Hazy sun, 65° 24hr: 63/80° It was HHH all day yesterday & at 9:20pm the skies lit up with lightning, thunder, and strong wind. Rain didn't last long. A smaller storm came through around midnight.
8/5/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 62° 24hr: 60/79° Lots of tall thunderheads formed yesterday in the heat and humidity, but no storms. Just giant towering white clouds.
8/6/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Partly cloudy with very hazy sun barely showing through, 67° Some dew which totaled a single drop in the gauge this morning. 24hr: 62 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /78°
8/7/2019 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Mostly cloudy, 65° 24hr: 65/77° Ground not even wet under the car.
8/8/2019 8:00 AM 0.45 M M M M Partly cloudy, 65° 24hr: 63/76° The brunt of the storms went around us last evening with lots of distant thunder. Lost power for 40 minutes; local paper says three towns were affected after lightning hit a utility pole.
8/9/2019 8:00 AM 0.41 M M M M Beautiful sunny morning, 64° 24hr: 60/77° An impressive thunderstorm rolled through before 7pm. Dumped a lot of rain very quickly.
8/10/2019 7:30 AM T 0.0 M M M Sunny, crisp morning, 58° with heavy dew. 24hr: 56/78° A beautiful day! Four drops in the gauge this morning; not sure if it's dew or precip.
8/11/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 57° with heavy dew. 24hr: 53/77° 3 drops of dew in the gauge this morning. Just another beautiful start to the day!
8/12/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 55° with heavy dew. 24hr: 53/72°
8/13/2019 8:00 AM T M M M M Cloudy, 69° 24hr: 55 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /77° By the looks of the glass in the skylight and the walkway, it looks like we had a few recent drops, although there is nothing in the gauge.
8/14/2019 8:00 AM 0.06 M M M M 66° I don't know whether to report 'overcast' or 'light fog.' Feels like mist in the air. 24hr: 65/71° [9am update: when leaving this morning I could see from the valley below the top third of the Sparta Mountains in the clouds. So the observation report should be low cloud ceiling.]
8/15/2019 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Thin overcast, 63° 24hr: 61/74°
8/16/2019 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, 63° 24hr: 63/75°
8/17/2019 7:30 AM 0.62 M M M M Mostly cloudy, humid, and still, 68° 24hr: 63 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /76° Really came down hard for a period overnight.
8/18/2019 8:00 AM 0.23 M M M M Foggy, 67° 24hr: 65/78° Just after 11pm the wind, thunder, and rain moved in. Not a lot of lighning.
8/19/2019 8:00 AM 0.68 M M M M Sunny, 67° 24hr: 65/81° Around 7pm strong wind kicked off an impressive thunder storm and brought down a large limb from one of our large maples.
8/20/2019 8:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Sunny through thin clouds, 66° 24hr: 64/80° Dark skies with thunder and a blast of table shaking lightning around 2:30pm; but the storm seemed to move above and below us. We did get some brief, light rain, but all of the action seemed to be around us. Good. Because we still haven't cleaned up the big limb from the storm that moved through the day before except to lift it off the pation lights and chairs and drag it out onto the lawn for chopping up.
8/21/2019 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy with some dim sun shining through occasionally, 68° with very heavy dew. 2 drops of it in the gauge. Still and very humid. 24hr: 66/80°
8/22/2019 8:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Sunny, 71° with a light breeze. 24hr: 68/77° Rain yesterday around 11am. Very hot and humid.
8/23/2019 7:30 AM 0.64 M M M M Overcast, 61° with a few drops still falling out of the trees. 24hr: 61/79° Wow! 10° cooler today than yesterday. Heavy rain with thunder and lightning began just after 7pm. Really came down hard!
8/24/2019 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Sunny, 55° 24hr: 54/68° Beautiful morning! Reached for a sweatshirt to take the dog out and read the gauge. No A/C yesterday; slept with all the windows open. Lovely!
8/25/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, 58° 24hr: 55 [yesterday morning's reset] /67° Another gogeous morning!
8/26/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy, 55° 24hr: 52/67° A single drop of what I guess was dew in the gauge. By the time I got inside to write the report, the skies started to clear, and it turned into another beautiful, sunny morning.
8/27/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy, 55° 24hrs: 53/66°

9/5/2019 5:15 AM 0.17 M M M M Partly cloudy, 56° 24hr: 56/76° Rain started around 4pm but didn't last long. Not usually this early in my report: Orion in the East was a sign of the change of seasons.
9/6/2019 8:00 AM T M M M M Cloudy, 54° 24hr: 52/66° Not sure if the drops in the gauge is heavy dew or a trace of rain.
9/7/2019 8:00 AM 0.08 M M M M Sunny, 52° 24hr: 50/60° Rain started around 8pm. Was surprised it was only 0.08" because it rained steadily for a while. Likely orographic lift with the east wind hitting our ridgeline; in the winter these bring our "dumper" snowfalls.
9/8/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy, 56° with moderate dew. 24hr: 53/66° Another morning where I'm not sure if the 3 drops in the gauge were rain or dew.

9/13/2019 8:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Sunny, 52° 24hr: 52/79° Quite a change in airmass yesterday. Two separate batches of very light sprinkly, mostly misting really --came throught in the late afternoon and again in the early evening. Pavement under the large trees remained dry.
9/14/2019 8:00 AM T M M M M Cloudy, breezy, 58° 24hr: 52 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /63° A single drop in the gauge but it doesn't appear to be dew. There is no condensation on SunShed windows, cars, grass, or the gauge.

9/28/2019 8:00 AM T M M M M Sunny, 57° with moderate dew. 24hr: 48 [yesterday a.m.'s reset] /64° Didn't actually observe rain, but 6 drops is more that we get with even very heavy dew. Brown, crispy leaves have started fluttering down; the only thing turning red is Virginia Creeper vines!
