Increasing clouds yesterday, snow started (roughly) shortly after 5pm (start ~5:07pm at J's ~0.9mi to ~SW). Winds up in eve. Probably snow all night! Snowing & blowing at obs time. Gauge nearly full of snow! NOTE: Fairly confident in my new snow measurement, but it isn't for sure & also wasn't taken from usual snow board/location. The snow board was (unusually) part of a long, skinny snow drift & it wasn't at all accurate. Ended up taking measurement from top of garbage can. There were small leafless tree branches a bit over it, but that was the only flat non-ground surface that wasn't uneven from driftiness! But 10" should be closish from how things looked overall. Total snow depth was taken at usual spot, it was free of drifts & low spots. Confident that measurement is as good as it'll get, given the wind. Also 13" total - 3" old snow = 10" new supports my new snow measurement as best as can be. Drifts up to 18" at least. I will add I am surprised the gauge & new snow values were so close, given the wind, I wouldn't expect the gauge to fill up so much! (But it could also be that the wind died down overnight - that would explain things easily.) |

Quickly became completely overcast yesterday morning, snow start late morning, intermittent in afternoon, going again at night with wind too. Still snowing & blowing at obs time. Note - measured gauge ~7:20 & new/total snow ~7:40 am by time shoveled paths to each etc. Snow board location wasn't as badly drifted as last time, but still looked inaccurate - low & a little drifted. So used the garbage can lid again for new snow(see 12/28). That spot seemed much more accurate today from what the accumulation looked like overall + total snow depth was 9.5-10" old so 4.5-5" new. Intermittent small graupel & some snow yesterday morning through mid-afternoon, then lifted. Pretty warm, most new snow already melted by time I got out in afternoon, but measured on top of old, hard snowpack 0.3" of new which is very reasonable. Total snow ranges from bare in very sunniest areas to 6", avg of remaining snow seems to be ~4.5. |
