Happy October! I hope this will be a more generous water year. We have nice mostly cloudy skies this morning, a sight we haven’t had for a long time. It has been so warm and so dry; the endless summer. |

40% chance gave us a great deal of wind (50 mph) and a tiny amount of rain, typical for drought. It remains very dry here. The high winds negated most of the moisture. |

The rain fell so gently that it all soaked in, which is a rare event with so much rain. We have received about a quarter of our calendar year rain in the last 3 weeks. |

The weather forecasting for this event said 20% (raised to 60% when it began) with no warnings and an inch or 2 of snow forecast. The roads were covered with ice since the first precipitation froze and Interstate 25 was closed for a few hours. On the other hand we are very grateful for the desperately needed precipitation, which is a tremendous blessing. Gorgeous looking! The most snow we have had at once in about 3 or 4 years. |

The 80% chance of rain was wonderful since even with this rain we are well below an an inch for the year. This rain gets us to a half inch. It washed away all the remaining snow on the ground so now we can start our wildfire mitigation. |

Two days of winter storm warnings and 80% and 70% chance of snow with a few flurries and absolutely no accumulation. It’s astonishing that no one revised their forecast during those 48 hours given the wind. If they had looked at windy.com they could have changed their outlook. It costs people time and money to have a long winter storm warning. It also means next time NOAA is likely to have its warnings ignored, which is dangerous. |

Prediction involves maximising the ratio of signal to noise, with the signal being the predictable component and the noise been unpredictable events. This week seems to be all noise to forecasters. They have predicted 60%, 40%, 40% all with 0” of rain. We did have dry lightning last night. |

The entire northern horizon was a dark metallic blue cloud by 5:30 pm. By 7:30, there was lightning 5 miles away. By 7:45, there was lightning to the NE, N, NW and W, huge cloud to ground repeated bolts, many per minute. We endured over a half hour of extreme dry lightning all around us before it rained, some bolts shaking our solid adobe house. The lightning continued with variable intensity for 4 hours. The rain was a gentle, female rain that fell for hours. We have lived here for over 20 years and never, ever before saw so much cloud to ground dry lightning for such a long period. The whole sky was electrified everywhere we looked. The rainfall was 20% of what we had received in 7 months in 2019 (and desperately needed). Extraordinary lighting event. |

Zero percent chance of precipitation yesterday. We had a thunderstorm at 9:30 pm and it rained, to our delight and surprise. |

Down to 45°F at night. The current trees leaves are turning and dropping. No other trees are turning color yet. The last roses are blooming. The hummingbirds are still here. The first day of fall is very welcome! |

Once again a 20% chance of precipitation was a winner, on the heels of rain with 0% chance. The rain fell around 9 pm and again in the early AM. There was unusually thick fog at dawn, with visibility down to a quarter mile. Autumn came in beautifully! |
