11/14/2018 9:20 AM 0.01 M M M M My heart lept at the sight of the wet, wet world, but only 0.01 in the gauge. Not enough for a good long drink. I hope the suffering conifers are drinking through their needles.... Overcast sky, a promising grey, may be rain later
11/15/2018 9:20 AM 0.10 M M M M When I emptied the gauge, skies were blue, haze in the west. Soon after something settled down upon us, hopefully mist, but a hint of color, irritation with breathing, makes me fear it is smoke, or at least mixed with smoke. Whatever it is has filled the yard, what I usually call mist to the ground
11/16/2018 9:20 AM 0.01 M M M M very wet world for so little in the gauge, white sky breaking up with blue showing through, DBOP and cloud bank (smoke bank?) in the west. Shivering in my fleece clothes and rubber flip flops since I obeyed the no wood stove burning request. I turned on the supplemental heat this am, but since it is an inverter, extracting the warmth from outside air, and outside air is still under 40 deg, the indoor thermometer has not budged.

11/23/2018 9:25 AM 0.68 M M M M raining. I only weigh a pound more than yesterday, in spite of eating so much. And a whole French apple pie still left, mmmmm. .68 is a nice long drink for the trees, and hopefully not enough for any flooding.
11/24/2018 9:25 AM 0.98 M M M M blue and white sky, sunshine, fine moisture in the rain, falls short of rain. The ribbons I tied to the persimmon tree is keeping them mostly bird uneaten, though I worry the strange weather has just meant the birds who eat them are missing. They are getting overripe on the tree in spite of looking perfect; I discovered this yesterday. I roasted two overripe ones for breakfast, and they are delicious.

12/31/2018 9:25 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M frosty, frosty, frosty, beautiful frosty leaves. Ice on the top of the water in the gauge. Blue sky, a white cloud here and there, such a beautiful day I wished I had not agreed to go skiing at Teacup. Nordic tracks were firm and fast, not a touch of ice; skating so perfect that the skis almost skated by themselves. Unfortunately the downhill conditions were equally good, and the drive was 3 1/2 hrs each way in traffic, with only 2 hrs to ski in between. But oh such a lovely two hours..... I hope my frosty home will be as beautiful for New Year's
1/1/2019 9:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M frosty grass and leaves, blue sky with the occasional wispy white cloud, only a faint DBOP. The woods are blessed with frost flowers on the trails today, welcoming in the New Year. But alas, yesterday's frost flowers, already losing their sharp definition, not so fine and elegant as those I have photographed before. I skied at Teacup yesterday, thinking I had given up only frosty leaves and porcupine ice, thinking it was not fully frost flower weather yet. Nevertheless, they are beautiful still, and overall a gloriously beautiful first day of the year.
1/2/2019 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M In spite of predictions of freezing fog, moist air in other words, the frost flowers had continued to blunt their fine lines and had not grown more extravagant in icy beauty. So I gave in to pressure, and was the carpool driver again for a Nordic ski day at Teacup Lake. Mount Hood in his cloud cap, lit up bight white in the sunshine, graced our drive up, graced the ski trails, the macro version of icy beauty.

It is hard to know what season to love most.

We were all informed that it was too socked in to see the eclipse, and yet... the moon was so bright, when it finally rose high enough to be poised in a gap between tall treetops, it shone softly, fuzzily, about half way through the eclipse as it drifted into sight. And, just as softly, I was able to watch it progress to totality. In spite of my patience and persistence, I did not see it come back. The air had thickened. Much later, she cruised in her abnormal brightness through the clouds, and in spite of clouds, lighting up the landscape, casting moon shadows through the thick air.

1/23/2019 9:25 AM 1.00 M M M M overcast but bright, not raining. Skied at Teacup yesterday, a veritable blizzard of wet warm snow. This was the kind of snow the wicked witch of the west would send down on Dorothy, if Dorothy and the cowardly lion and scarecrow and tin woodman were traveling the yellow brick road on Nordic skis. The snow was like setting concrete, gluing itself in great stilts on the bottom of our skis, glueing us down, trapping us. Still much beauty to be in all that snow....

Snowed fairly hard with big fat flakes for a while yesterday, but the snowflakes did not leave evidence of their arrival anywhere. In places where there is a sheet of snow not quite to the edges of an open space, there is a charming effect of the sheet beginning to retract toward the middle, as if elastic. I hope we switch to rain for a while here, and it continues to snow higher up. Gordon Creek is still low, though the small streams are running fairly normally now.

4/2/2019 8:30 AM 0.01 M M M M overcast; the world looks as if it has had a good rain, but only .01 in the gage. My favorite trillium continue to appear, though not all have come up yet. None of the quadrillions seem to survive to reappear each year, and all last year's were eaten. I don't know whether being eaten rather than living the full bloom cycle affects survival to bloom again the following years.

4/7/2019 10:30 AM 1.29 M M M M Auwe, I forgot to go out to the gauge this morning. Steady rain when I did remember, pouring down now. We need this rain, but it will be the third year in a row with heavy rain as soon as my plum tree blossomed. Past two years no plums. And I am worried whether the stream will get so powerful that I will lose one or more of the four stream temperature monitors I put in. Too high now to get to them to check. The only excuse for forgetting to check the gauge this am was the rather horrible procedure I just had for actinic keratoses. Have to avoid light and by the time I had the fifty layers of sunscreen and was hatted and covered, I had forgotten about the gauge.....

4/21/2019 9:25 AM 0.02 M M M M a fine misty rain, not dense enough for mist, hardly qualifying as rain, light and refreshing to the skin, sky a soft white, cottonwoods bright leaved and stately, claiming their place of beauty among the conifers.

5/9/2019 5:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet grass, pale sky, DBOP. I did not latch the gate properly coming back from taking the garbage down to the road last night. The dogs took the opportunity to head off after the scent trails that have been tantalizing them on leash, big single cougar, maybe two, a pair of slightly smaller cougar hunting as a team, coyote, bobcat, deer all showing on the trail camera. Gave up searching along the cougar favored trails at 4:30 am; they came in at 5:40, Orca limping badly. So thankful to have them home and alive. Sickle moon was gorgeously colorful as only dirty air can do.

5/23/2019 9:20 AM 0.15 M M M M Mist lays heavy on the land. Actually it is lifting already by the time I go out to the rain gauge, but I wanted to use that phrase. The early morning mist is so magical and transforming; I love to wake up to it. I recently learned that the height of coast redwood is limited by the hydraulic pressure needed and able to be generated to get nutrition/fluids to the topmost branches, but that where there is mist to give moisture up higher than the hydraulic pressure reaches, the trees can be taller. Ka'ua noe, misty rain. Yesterday a little before 6 we had a downpour; I expected more in the gauge.
5/24/2019 9:20 AM 0.05 M M M M raining, not heavy but steady. Wind is audible and visible in the trees, branches swaying, but every time I try to determine direction, it seems to change; leaves thrown up change direction, the slant of rain points a different way. A lightly swirling morning.

6/14/2019 8:50 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M wet-ish grass, overcast sky. The overnight bug devouring of all ripe-ish strawberries is placing the strawberries and their bugs and slugs in the same category as cherries, a fruit produced in my gardens but never eaten by humans, just birds. I don't really mind growing food for birds, and I love growing for pollinators, but somehow I don't feel the same way about putting in all that strawberry work in order to support the diets of those particular bugs and slugs.
6/15/2019 9:25 AM 0.01 M M M M When I looked outside earlier, there was light mist and the world looked wet enough to have had a real rain. When I checked the gauge, the mist had lifted, leaving just a trace of moisture in the air. Sky was overcast, but now sun is out, the homogeneous white is bunching up on the way to puffy whites, blue sky showing through. We need some real rain.

I worry I should be cleaning gutters--not cleanable really, have those no-cleaning spongy things with flammable debris stuck on top--- and cutting more beautiful trees near the house, trees shading me in the summer, providing wind breaks all year round. I see wind in their branches now.....

8/8/2019 8:50 AM 0.05 M M M M Mist to the ground when I looked out earlier, a fine moisture in the air when I checked the gauge, the drizzle NOAA promised. May the leaves and needles be drinking it in, if not the roots. Robins covered the open areas, searching with beaks for all who came out for the fresh moisture
8/9/2019 9:25 AM 0.03 M M M M cloudy; the plants and trees continue to drink from their leaves. Not much has soaked into the ground Rolling thunder began a little before 7. Initially from the south of me, then east, then overhead, continued rolling, rumbling, cracking. First raindrops at 7 PM. Not much rain until a bit ago, now raining harder. Never saw any lightening thank goodness; worried about forest fire whenever I hear thunder.
8/10/2019 8:30 AM 0.27 M M M M mist in the canyon, overcast sky. The thunder continued last night well past midnight, more and more violent, sky-rending cracks followed by long rumbles and rolls. More than the drizzle NOAA promised
8/11/2019 9:25 AM 0.65 M M M M sky nearly covered with thick white an grey clouds; a few blue breaks. Worked all day in the total burn area of the Eagle Creek fire, trying to find and free up the seedlings we planted that have been overgrown and overwhelmed. 8/12/2019 9:25 AM 0.01 M M M M Very wet grass, clear sky, sunshine, DBOP (already). Stream is not noticeably higher than before the rain. Portland apparently got more than I did! The rain is at a good time to give me hope for chanterelles this year, after two dry years with almost none up here.
8/13/2019 9:25 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Wet grass, clear sky, sunshine, haze and DBOP in the west. Just the right temperature out for the morning vitamin D walk, checking the gauge and eating my first blueberries of the day off the bush. Crossed over to the island in the stream yesterday to inspect the invasive trefoil and pull thistles. Stream is so low that my hiking kitty followed me and the dogs across, instead of just staying on the near bank and howling as he does when the stream is anywhere close to normal level. I have not seen the beaver, but he did take down a little tree, encouraging me to think he continues alive and well, in spite of all the cougar and bobcat and coyote on the trail cameras.

8/24/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cousins here as brief houseguests; in all the rush of making the ground nut pancakes with garden berries, or stuffed with ricotta and chocolate and topped with homemade dark chocolate sauce-- it takes so long to feed everyone with pancakes--- and getting in stream walks before they had to leave, I forgot to write down the ET reading. Zero rain, and most rain actually, is easy to remember. And the poor cousins, enjoying the stream, the outdoor shower, distracted by a new piano to play, were late to the memorial they had flown here to attend anyway. Auwe no. 9/8/2019 9:25 AM 0.63 M M M M Some real rain. Need to go check chanterelle land again. Overcast now, not raining. Thunder began around 4:30 yesterday. I always say that in spite of frequent thunder, I never see lightening here. But when I checked on one of the outdoor cameras, there was great forked lightening to the southwest. I stopped splitting wood with the big splitter after the thunder got more frequent, thinking working with a huge hunk of metal in a thunder storm was not a good idea.
9/9/2019 10:50 AM 0.57 M M M M Steady, moderate rain. Has stopped raining by the time I am entering this. Apologies for another late entry; still sick, still splitting wood all day, so barely able to move by morning.

7/12/2019 7/16/2019 9:40 AM 5 0.01 M M pitiful. and the stream is so low. But all is lovely, sunshine and soft white clouds, cloud bank in the west, more raspberries boysenberries mulberries than I can eat. Birds are keeping up wth the blueberries pretty much. I removed about 40 slugs from the garden just before dark. I was wondering why I had never noticed how onions have those smooth, dark protuberances along their green tops, when I realized that all those interesting greens were actually covered with slugs. And the irregular surface of the dirt, slugs. It was like a street party, but a garden party, slugs cruising everywhere. I picked them up one by one, into my compost pail, and put them all into the compost bin, hoping they will make themselves useful. So many, the compost pail was heavy to carry.
