Thunderstorms, which produced tornados, power outages, and heavy rains, passed through Texas and the Houston area on Halloween. Many areas around Houston and Harris County received 2-4" of rainfall, which caused some nuisance street flooding but also brought many bayous and creeks to near bank full overnight. My location had received 1.79" of rain between 7am and 8pm before the main line reached the area. Once the main squall line roared through my location around 9pm with multiple areas of broad rotation, strong winds, and heavy rain, we received an additional 1.15" of rain with quite a bit of debris strewn about streets and lawns around the area. |

Houston experienced its fourth "official" wintry event of the calendar year yesterday 11/13/18 when a cold front and associated precipitation produced very light, non-accumulating amounts of sleet/graupel/snow around area of southeast Texas, including the Houston area. There were no reports of roadway issues since the air temperature and ground temperatures were well above freezing, but the wintry event caused quite a stir to us Gulf Coast weather observers. Houston's primary reporting station at KIAH reported an official Trace of snow. However, no precipitation was seen at my location in the City of West University Place, TX. Not to say it didn't happen, it may have indeed happened, but during the times of observation throughout the day, nothing was seen here. Too bad, too. :-( |

A slow-moving cold front combined with (1) a weak upper level low pressure system, (2) strong and diffluent jet stream winds, (3) strong low level winds, and (4) a developing surface low pressure to provide for a flood and flash flood event for much of the eastern half of Texas on Friday and Friday night. I received a total of 4.45" for the 24hr period ending at 7am. Sent in a significant weather report around 10:30pm when I noted that we had received 1.81" of rainfall between 8:30pm and 10:30pm. Here are some of the hourly rainfall amounts I noted:
thru 8:30pm: 1.44"
8:30-10:30pm: 1.81"
10:30-11:30pm: 0.43"
11:30-12:30am: 0.69"

Squall line associated with a pre-frontal trough created quite an electric night for areas of Texas. Line of storms, which caused the issuance of several tornado watches overnight, moved through Houston starting around 4:50am. Rain still falling at report time. Prior to squall line pasage, had about 0.68” of rain the gauge around 4:30am. At report time, 7:00am, dumped 1.98”. So, squall line accounted for additional 1.30” in 2.5 hours. Gusty winds from the S and SW quickly switched to N and NW winds as the squall line passed, and temperatures dropped about 15°F in 20 minutes. |

An upper level low in the Texas panhandle and a surface low and associated cold front in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico has provided for a persistent inflow of moisture and steady rains from Texas into Oklahoma. Areas in Southeast Texas have received upwards of 4" of rainfall, based initially off of Harris County Flood Control District rain gauges as of 7am this morning. My location received 2.11" of rain in the 24hr period ending at 7am, with additional amounts of rain expected later today. |

We experienced trace amounts of precipitation yesterday, including some pellets of sleet/graupel. There were two rounds of this wintry precipitation, but neither lasted long and given the warm temperatures of the ground, everything that fell melted quickly. Temps were solidly in the low to mid 40°F range, so this wintry event was quite interesting to see. |

Received 3.22” of raifall thru 7am. But the big rainfall occurred between 6pm and 7pm last night. During that time, received over 2.50” in just 60 minutes. Unusual street flooding occurred in our area. Looking at other HCFCD gauges as well as Radar-rstimated rainfall products, appears that there was high variability across our adjacent counties. |

Strong area of low pressure ejected northeastward out of Mexico yesterday morning bringing a line of strong and severe storms from central Texas and off east into southeast Texas. As the line approached Houston, the line hrew severe with a few areas of microburst winds and possibly small, short-lived tornados. The line moved quickly through and only dropped 0.70” of rain on my location. A possible tornado passed through a well-defined path of damage to vegetation and property only eight blocks south of me caused quite a bit of activity and concern by residents along its path. NWS Houston may be investigating the area later today. |

A cold front moved into and slowed/stalled across southeast Texas and the upper Texas coast late yesterday and overnight. The front served as a focus for a line of thinderstorms that formed around 5pm yesterday afternoon. Training of cells, slow movement of the line, heavy rains, frequent lightning (one of the most continuous lightning displays I have ever seen), hail, and flooding have accompanied this rain event. Rain rates in some areas reached the 2-4”/hr rates that NWS had forecasted. In some instances, 10-minute rainfall amounts exceeded 1.60”, equating to ridiculous 9”/hr equivalent rates. At my location, we received 2.74” for the 24hr period ending at 7am today. |

An outflow boundary from storms that fired in North Texas and Northern Louisiana early yesterday morning propagated south and reached the southeast Texas area late yesterday afternoon. Areas of showers and storms fired up in the northern counties along the boundary%2C but not everyone saw rain. Rainfall totals were quite varied across the area %28another perfect example of why we need more CoCoRaHS observers%29. As the broken line of storms reached Houston%2C however%2C a well-defined band of strong storms with gusty winds%2C heavy rains%2C and frequent lightning developed. Additional boundary collisions amplified this line as it moved towards the coast. The backside of this system was quite electric with beautiful lightning bolts that crawled along the underside of the resultant anvil. |

Total reported this morning isn%E2%80%99t as high as other days at my location%2C but most of it came in about 20 minutes yesterday %288%2F25%2F19%29. Sent in a significant weather report after receiving 0.63%E2%80%9D in 20 minutes between 12%3A50pm and 1%3A10pm %281.89%E2%80%9D%2Fhr rate%29. The high rain rate and more extensive%2C longer-lasting rains caused some problems elsewhere in the area%2C and could have been a problem here. Luckily%2C the system only lasted a short while here and brought some welcome relief from hot and dry conditions experienced since the beginning of July. |

Tropical Storm Imelda formed quickly yesterday and made landfall near Freeport%2C TX southwest of Houston around midday. Several rain bands rotated into the area and brought 3.51%E2%80%9D in the past 24 hrs to my location in the City of West University Place%2C TX. Rain rates were rather modest in my area%2C likely only reaching the 1.50%E2%80%9D%2Fhr rate at times. But%2C flooding in this area was minor%2C at worst%2C as occasional breaks in the rain allowed consistent and sufficient runoff of rain water. Ground is obviously sufficiently saturated so heavy rain rates will start to cause some problems. |

Tropical Depression Imelda continued to affect our area yesterday. After rains departed early in the day%2C our area experienced a welcome break from the rains until around 5pm when storms began to fire up along axes of instability and created new feeder bands that rotated through the area. |

The remnants of tropical depression Imelda sure put a wallop on southeast Texas yesterday. The fourth day of rains associated with Imelda proved to be the worst as my location received 5.41%E2%80%9D of rain in 24hrs. Total accumulation for the four days%3A 10.38%E2%80%9D. At the peak of the storm for this area%2C which occurred in the 10%3A50am to 12%3A50pm time frame%2C we were seeing peak rain rates of just under 2%E2%80%9D%2Fhr%2C which led to unusual street flooding. Nearby watersheds overflowed and backed up streets for a short while but definitely caught many people by surprise%2C as evidenced by the number of vehicles stranded in this area of Houston. Elsewhere across the county%2C even more serious flooding issues occurred due to rain rates that exceeded 6%E2%80%9D%2Fhr in some spots. Imelda may prove to be a more prolific rain producer than Hurricane Harvey %282017%29 in some spots of Texas%2C particularly for it%E2%80%99s incredibly high rain rates. |
