Overall October 2018 was drier than normal, with a prolong stretch during mid-month with pleasant, dry, sunny conditions. Total October rainfall: 2.20" (my 22-yr ave. for Oct. is 2.95"; 30-yr ave. by PRISM is 2.44"). Last night's and this morning's dry cold winds have evaporated (sublimated) a large portion of the "snowpack", with large bare areas and only thin patches of remaining snow. A large majority of the captured snow in outer cylinder had sublimated overnight (only 0.01" remained to measure). Took a core sample from one of the remaining patches to get the 0.06" melted core value, but this is likely an underestimate (under-measurement). When yesterday's snow was falling, temps were hovering between 31 and 33°, so there was likely some level of melting that had occurred. Not an easy event to measure precipitation levels. |

Overall February 2019 was notably colder and snowier than normal, with many locations in western WA State having their coldest February in 25 years to 75 years, depending on location. Total February rainfall at this gauge location (including melted snow): 1.79" (2.15" is my 22-yr ave.; 1.97" is 30-yr Ave by PRISM). Total February snowfall: 8.0". Snow cover lingered for over a week to 10 days. Over 21 days had lows below freezing, including two nights with lows in the teens. Frigid NE winds occurred on many days, lowering wind chills into the 20s, teens, and single-digits. While signs of early spring plant growth ceased in February, I still had crocuses emerge and start blooming by late February. Total cumulative precipitation from Jan. 1st thru Feb. 28th: 4.52" (about 0.75 to 1.25" below ave); Total precip. from Oct. 1st - Feb. 28th: 14.56" (0.11" below PRISM ave.; and 1.38" below my 22-yr ave.). |

Total cumulative rainfall for May 2019: 1.16" (my 22-yr average is 1.48"; J.Giard's 41-yr ave for May is 1.51", and 30-yr ave by PRISM for this location is 1.44"). Total cumulative gauge-measured ETo for May: 2.65". Even with our recent rains, three-quarters of the state is either abnormally dry or in moderate drought. |

About two-third of the days had highs in the 60s, roughly one-third had highs in the 70s, and two days reached into the low 80s (June 11th was our first day reaching 80°). First 26 days of June were extremely dry. 0.70" rain fell on June 27th. Total rainfall for June 2019 was 0.89" (1.04" is my 22-yr ave; 1.23" is 30-yr ave by PRISM). My records show that over the last decade, most Junes have been notably drier than average. Disturbing trend. Total cumulative ETo for June 2019: 3.27". I'm still relying on friends to read my gauges periodically due to my slow recovery from surgery. |
