11/9/2018 9:30 AM 0.25 2.4 0.26 2.4 0.26 Snow began in early hours of the morning before I woke up, but ended at about 9:30 AM. Snow fell mostly vertically as large flakes from before 7:00 AM until roughly around 9:15 AM. After that, snow flakes became very small and fell at an angle. Sudden gusts of wind blew snow from adjacent rooftops for about 2 minutes just before 9:30 AM. I estimate two gusts blew. Wind did not last long. Seeing the snow stopped, and seeing snow was just beginning to melt on sidewalk, I got out as soon as snow stopped falling. I took ground measurements in three places not subject to the snow gusts, melting, or drifts (there were no drifts). Snow depth measured in the three places (to nearest 10th): 2.125 inches; 2.625; and 2.5 equal average depth of 2.42 inches. Air temperature was very close to freezing (31°) and snow was very wet. Ratio of water to snow in ground core sample was 9.49 (2.42 inches/.255 snow water equivalent. Sky is overcast. New snow and snow on ground are the same, as this was the first accumulating snow.
11/10/2018 9:30 AM 0.02 M 0.02 1.5 0.17 The snow in the rain gauge was at varying levels from 1/2 inch in the center to two inches up the sides of the gauge, so new snowfall was not easy to ascertain. The snow on a flat board that was shielded from drifting and direct sunlight (thus, most protected from melting) was at a height of 1.375 inches with a thin layer of ice, which both snow and ice included and rounded to the nearest half inch is 1.5 inches of snow. A trace of snow was forecasted last night, and there was wind and drifting of snow in many areas of my property, including in the rain gauge area. Therefore, I cannot say with certainty if the snow in the rain gauge was all new snow or partly the result of infiltrating drifting snow. My personal opinion is that the snow was the result of new snowfall, because the drifting appeared to be low to the ground, and the top of the gauge is about 4.5 feet high. The sun is out and was out at the time of my observation, so I can assume there is melting occurring. The temperature is 29°, and there is a slight wind. The snow is considerably drier than yesterday, and, thus, lighter, so I am not sure what role any potential settling of snow may have on the diminishing height of snow. Based on my core SWE of .17 and the 1.375 inches measured on the board (board is around 30" x 30") the snow to water ratio is about 8.1 to 1, which quantifies the drier snow from yesterday's ratio of about 9.5 to 1. Sidewalks and roads are clear of snow, and over half the ground shows some grass coming through. No doubt drifting from the winds last night had an effect on snow height. Therefore, I did not believe taking multiple samples from the ground would yield an accurate mean level of snow height. I almost gave up on trying to obtain an accurate core sample when, while walking the property, I discovered the board that protects the air conditioner in winter. It is located in an area not subject to drifting, and is open to the sky not blocked by overhangs, trees, etc.
11/11/2018 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Overcast. 29°. No wind. Snow is melting everywhere on my property, so taking a core sample may not be truly representative of snow on the ground. Multiple measurements ranged from .625 inch to 2.375 inches. I was not able to find an area with average snow depth. The ground is bare in places to the south and completely snow covered toward the west, with patches of icy grass and large areas where the grass shows though snow in all areas. All measurements found ice underneath snow, or ice on top of grass where grass was not bare. A level board I used yesterday, that had a thin layer of crusty ice after I swept the snow off, was completely bare and dry today. (I measured the board today: it is 32" x 32".).
11/12/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast. 26°. Felt no wind, and found it nice enough to take a short walk. Snow is melting more, with it gone over most of my property, except for the higher areas on top of slopes. No reasonable chance of taking a representative core sample of snow remaining on the ground due to the variations of snow left in patches around the property. Properties facing north still have about an inch left of snow on the ground in most areas, based on the grass showing through, but I did not want to trespass to take a core sample.
11/13/2018 7:25 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Partly sunny skies. Temp is about 17°. I felt no wind. Snow is now in small crusty patches of white or grayish ice. I noticed the cement areas gleamed with a light frost, but the rain gauge was completely dry. Very nice morning, but very chilly.
11/15/2018 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No moisture inside the snow gauge, but heavy frost along outside of it. Frost covered all of the grass, garden, and glistened on the cement. Still some white patches of snow on the ground in neighboring areas, but most snow is gone from my property, except very small amounts along property edges. Temperature is 22°, and it feels cold outside.
11/16/2018 7:30 AM 0.09 0.5 0.07 0.5 0.07 SWE in snow gauge was .09. Most snow from the previous snowfall had melted, so I considered all ground measurements new snow: having measured where all old snow had previously melted and gone away. The flat air conditioning board measured .5 inch; the flat unwalked sidewalk measured .44 inch; and the patio measured .56 inch. Averaging the measurements, I concluded .5 inch new snowfall. I attempted to measure snow on the grass, but I sensed some snow rested on top of the grass, leaving an undetermined area below the grass top hollow of snow. Grass showed through the snow in most areas on my property. The snow that fell in the snow gauge was about .5 inch at lowest point, but snow sloped up one side. It was a clean, pretty snow that was much easier to behold its beauty than measure.
11/17/2018 9:00 AM 0.05 0.4 0.05 0.4 0.05 All snow from yesterday had melted yesterday by late-afternoon, as temperatures were mostly above freezing (about 38°) all afternoon. Snow in snow gauge at level point was about what was on the ground, but sloped upward on the side of the gauge. The SWE in the gauge was .05. I measured snow in various places, and they all were consistent at .375, with a couple measurements at slightly below (by .0625 or 1/16th of an inch). Snow to water ratio was 7.5, which is the driest snow I have measured so far this year. Snow was forecasted to arrive after midnight, so I cannot say when today's snow started. I am certain snow stopped at about 8:45 or so. It was over by 9:00 AM when I conducted observations. Very nice white, undisturbed snow that evenly covered the cement patio and walks and flat board that protects the air conditioner. Snow that fell on the grass allowed grass to shoot through to create my favorite kind of snowfall, which creates a kind of sage color with the white and green. I observed squirrel and rabbit tracks in the snow. Slight breeze at times.
11/18/2018 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny skies all over, and completely clear skies to the north and west. Some clouds to the south and east. Most snow is gone: very small patches of white here and there on the grass, but more snow lingers on the bare soil. Snow gauge was dry and empty this morning. It was 30°, but it felt warmer to me than that, and I felt no wind.
11/19/2018 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast and cold. About 26°. All snow on my property, including bare ground, is gone, except for about 5 quarter-size pieces of snow on bare ground in one area. There are a few bigger patches of varying sizes (long, thin strips along property boundaries to maybe 10 x 10 patches) in areas adjacent to my property across a road where buildings and sheds block the sunlight. Shoddy third-world internet keeps me from recording in a more timely manner.
11/20/2018 7:45 AM T T M T M Dusting of snow, with very little on the grassy areas, and just wisps of snow on the sides of walks and driveways. Small amount of snow in the snow gauge that amounted to just a trace of snow water equivalent. Mostly sunny. About 26°. No wind.
11/21/2018 9:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
11/23/2018 7:35 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Frost lingers on the bare ground, but none seen on grassy areas. Although most roofs are bare, I saw a couple roofs with frost or snow. The roofs were white enough to perhaps be snow. The rain gauge was dry inside, but felt slightly wet outside, but not frozen. I placed the inner tube and funnel on the gauge on Wednesday due to forecasts of rain today into tomorrow. So, if there was snow, the gauge may not have caught it. My opinion is there was just frost, but due to the two roofs which appeared slightly more covered than typical frost, I cannot be certain if precipitation was frost or snow. Temperature is 36°. I saw a small amount of leaves blown on the patio from yesterday's windiness. I did not feel a wind today.
11/24/2018 8:45 AM 0.16 M M M M Precipitation fell as all rain. It is not currently raining, but more rain is expected. Very damp sidewalks and soil. 43°.
11/25/2018 8:25 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Overcast. No snow remains anywhere due to mid-40s temps of the last couple days. Currently 38°. Soil in the garden around patio is very moist. Soil on north side is drier, probably due to the way the wind was blowing throughout the last 24 hours. Patio cement is dry. Light breezes.
11/26/2018 8:00 AM 0.17 1.1 0.17 1.1 0.17 All snow on ground is new snow. Snow gauge was frozen to post on north and east facing sides, but I was able to chop the icey snow away easily to free it. The snow packed about 3/4 inch thick on both sides. Inside the gauge, the snow accumulated slightly at the top, and snow on bottom was at varying levels. Snow water equivalent for snow inside the gauge was .17 inch. I took a core sample of snow from flat air conditioner wood cover most shielded from winds. (Wood cover is painted a very light yellow color.) The snow on the flat surface measured 1.0625 deep, and snow water equivalent was also .17 inch. The snow was crunchy to walk on. Last night at about 8:00 PM, I walked outside in heavy falling and blowing snow. The snow was accumulating on the cement driveway and walks as a slushy wet snow that I wish this morning I had cleared last night, since the cement areas are now crusted in icey, crunchy snow. Snow was also well accumulated on grassy areas by 8:00 PM last night, and is crunchy with frozen snow this morning. While outside last night, I noticed winds were blowing snow from the east. Very cold outside and breezy this morning. Overcast and 26°. Most other areas I wanted to measure appeared affected by the winds, and produced variations of snow depth from some grassy areas showing slightly through the white snow, to some other grassy and ground areas that appeared to have about two inches or so of snow. Our retaining wall that extends around the east and south areas of the property also showed varying depths of snow from about 1/2 inch to about two inches, indicative of effects from blowing snow. Core sample of snow depth included all of the icey snow I could capture, but I left a very thin layer of ice (unable to get a clean core sample that left the wood cover completely bare and dry).
11/27/2018 8:10 AM T T M 1.0 0.15 Cold. 22°. Less than a tenth inch of snow was in the bottom of the snow gauge, so I did not obtain snow water equivalent of snow inside the gauge. I obtained a core sample of remaining snow from same place I used for new snow (flat air conditioner cover painted in a light yellow color). Snow water equivalent is .15, but a thin layer of ice remained underneath. Snow remains at varying depths on the ground along all sides of my property, and is deeper toward the southwest. Snow in south western area of my property is about two inches deep and heavy. Snow to east is more shallow and crunchy. Grass shows through on eastern elevation. Ground snow depths are suspect due to effects of wind during and after storm. The pole the snow gauge is mounted to still has snow packed vertically on the north side of the pole. Our exterior lights mounted on the east wall of our house are still encased in about an inch of ice on the northern facing sides. I brushed away very dense, crunchy, icey snow off the east facing garage corner. The north eastern corner of our house exterior (vinyl siding) is covered in ice. Ground (grass, dirt, and cement) is covered in crunchy snow.
11/28/2018 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 1.5 0.16 Cold. 18°. No snow or moisture in the snow gauge. Snow is almost gone from flat A/C cover, but there is still a lot of snow on the ground. Therefore, I took a core sample from the ground least affected by wind and drifts still leftover from the storm a couple days ago. (Most snow on our property has been hard and crunchy, so it has not been effected much by winds after the storm, and has stayed mostly in place, except for effects from sunshine melting.) The snow I took as a core sample was 1.25 inch deep, and rested on top of the grass. After removing most of the grass from the melted sample, the SWE was .16. Areas on the cement that have snow depth under 1/2 inch is largely ice. The south side of my property still has snow depths of two inches or more, and is not as crunchy as the rest of the snow.
11/29/2018 8:00 AM 0.07 0.6 0.07 1.5 M 32°. Not too bad outside. It appears the snow fell last night without much wind. The snow in the snow gauge was not an even level: higher on one side of the gauge. Snow water equivalent of snow in gauge is .07. I measured new snow in two additional places: first on the cleared cement in front of the gauge; and second on the flat A/C cover. Both areas measured 10/16th inch of new snow: .625 tenths of an inch. I measured SWE from the sample obtained from the flat A/C cover (flat wood board) which also equaled .07. I measured existing snow (total of old and new) in three places on my property. The snow depths were: 1.5 inch; .875 inch; and 2.25 inches for an average depth of 1.54 inch. I attempted to take core samples, but I did not trust the accuracy of the results due to inclusion of grass and dirt that could not easily be removed, and their situation on top of the ground material. The ground snow is losing its crunchiness.
11/30/2018 8:00 AM T M M M M There were about 5 very small snowflakes in the gauge.
12/1/2018 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Rain gauge is completely dry, and now equipped again with the inner tube and top funnel due to expected rain today. 38° with light breezes. Sky is overcast, and I heard some birds chirping very softly in the distance. There is now significant melting of snow underway. Most lawns show a pretty, splotchy pattern of green and white as the grass is seen through the melting snow. I heard a persistent flow of water draining through the downspouts from the gutters for the first time in over a week. All things will be very wet with melting snow and the forecast of one inch of rain today. Hopefully, the warmer temps and rain will eliminate all of the existing snow before the next round of snow hits tomorrow. Winds are predicted to be very high today as well.
12/2/2018 7:45 AM 0.95 0.0 0.00 T M About 40° with a burst of wind every now and then. Overcast skies. Most snow is gone, except for very small patches scattered around the area. The birds in the area were more active and chirping louder than yesterday.
12/3/2018 8:20 AM 0.25 T M T M The forecast called for rain turning to snow yesterday, so I removed the inner tube and top funnel from the gauge. This morning, I found no snow accumulation, except for a very light dusting in small areas on the grass and bare ground. There was no snow accumulation on cement areas. It appears most precipitation fell as rain. We noticed snow falling last evening in very small flakes from about 3:30 PM through perhaps 8:00 PM intermittently. The snow gauge had a little snow inside and toward the top of the gauge, and on the post the gauge is mounted to around 8:00 PM last night. This morning, the gauge precipitation was in the form of solid ice about a third of an inch deep (.37 inch), which I melted down to the ice water equivalent of .25 inch. Breezy, overcast skies, and 31°. There are still very small patches of snow on the ground here and there from last week's snow. (I saw three small patches of snow in the area).
12/4/2018 8:00 AM T M M M M
12/5/2018 8:45 AM T T M M M There were several very small, hard flakes of snow in the bottom of snow gauge this morning that easily fell out when the gauge was tapped upside down (estimate about 30 flakes). About 25° with not much of a wind. Sky is overcast. Despite the cold temperature, it does not feel that cold out. There are a few hold over very small patches of snow (I saw three in the area) in places where snow was shoveled from driveways that have not yet melted away from last week's snow. Otherwise, the rest of the ground is thankfully free of snow.
12/6/2018 7:40 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Mostly cloudy. 25°, and feels chilly. Light winds. Those few little patches of snow (from piles where snow was cleared from walkways and drives) still linger from last week's snowfall. Otherwise, ground is clear.
12/7/2018 7:05 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Thick overcast gray with hints of pink (from the end of the sunrise) behind clouds. 16°, but does not feel that bad. No wind that I could feel. Pesky little patches of snow in a few places next to drives still left over from last week's snow.
12/8/2018 8:05 AM T T M M M I noticed light snow falling in large flakes during the mid-morning yesterday. There was no moisture inside the gauge this morning, but snowflakes actually froze in perfect shape to the outside of the gauge. Very sunny and mostly clear skies. 23° and no wind. The small snow patches from last week's snow are still there seemingly unchanged from yesterday.
12/9/2018 7:15 AM T T M M M Like yesterday, there was no moisture inside the snow gauge. Also like yesterday, there were perfectly formed snowflakes frozen to the outside of the gauge. Today, the frozen snowflake formation extended from the top of the gauge to about two inches from the bottom of the gauge. (Yesterday's formation extended only about 4 to 5 inches down from the top of the gauge.). About 15 or 16°. No wind, but feels very chilly. A light frost covers the ground and grassy areas and roofs are all white: this could be from light snow, since there were new flakes on the outside of the snow gauge, however, I did not see any snowing throughout the entire day yesterday. Clear skies and a subdued sunny permeate the area.
12/10/2018 7:05 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There was no moisture in the snow gauge this morning, but frost covered most of the outside of the gauge from top to bottom. There were no discernible individual snowflake shapes on the gauge like there was yesterday and the day before. Frost covers the grass and ground areas, and the rooftops remain white, as they were yesterday. There is a hint of fog out that makes the air look hazy. The sky was otherwise clear against the fading sunrise. I saw two clear, crisp, and bright moving chem trails from what I think were planes landing east. 17° and chilly with a slight wind.
12/11/2018 8:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No moisture inside the gauge. Sunny and 26°. No wind. A light frost is on the ground, and some frost appears on the snow gauge from the top to about two inches down. The sky is clear, but there are wide chem trails in long thick fluffy lines: one in an X formation over my home, and a couple others in single lines on both sides of the X. While yesterday's two chem trails were very thin and clear, and short and moving with actual plane movement, the chem trails today were stationary and covered much more of the sky. They were thin and see-thru, but had a fluffiness to them. Yesterday's chem trails were bright and somewhat pink-golden from the lingering sunrise. Since I observed later today, the chem trails take on a different look. A few small pesky snow patches adjacent to plowed areas remain from snowfall that fell two weeks ago.
12/12/2018 7:40 AM T M M M M There were a few small drops of water on the inside sides of the snow gauge, but none at the bottom. 36 or 37°, with no wind. Overcast skies. Not snowing yet.
12/13/2018 7:40 AM 0.04 0.0 M M M It snowed yesterday with wet flakes (or sleet) that fell straight down in the mid to late morning. What fell inside the gauge was found this morning as solid ice. There was no accumulation of snow on the ground. Today, the exterior snow gauge was covered with frost. There was no frost on the ground, but I did see two large patches of ice: one on the road to the east and one on the road to the south, both east of my house. There appears to be streaky cirrus clouds in the sky, and several visible chem trails as well. Somewhat sunny. It does not feel too cold at 27°, and I felt no wind. The pesky little patches of snow on the ground from what fell two weeks ago or so is still there: not melted yet.
12/14/2018 7:55 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Dew on exterior of snow gauge. No moisture on inside of snow gauge. However, my neighbor's driveway to the north was completely wet. My neighbor's driveway is at the bottom of a small hill between our properties, so I am guessing the warmer temperatures are melting the frozen moisture in the ground, and the moisture is invisibly seeping onto the cement driveway. Soil is moist. Temperature is 35° with no wind. High, thin cirrus clouds to north and west, and thicker alto stratus clouds to the east and south. A couple snow patches from what fell two weeks ago are still around, but smaller than yesterday, and some have finally disappeared.
12/15/2018 8:20 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T M There was no moisture inside the snow gauge, but the outside of the gauge was covered with frost. Frost was also on the grass and dirt areas. 30° and feels cold. Mostly clear and sunny skies. A few light wispy cirrus clouds in the eastern distance. A small patch of snow from snow weeks ago still remains.
12/16/2018 7:40 AM 0.01 M M M M Very thick frost on the inside and outside of the snow gauge, ground, and roofs. Cement surfaces are very slippery with clear frost. Skies are mostly clear and somewhat sunny with what appears as alto stratus clouds to the east. About 27°. Feels cold, but no wind.
12/17/2018 7:52 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T M Sunny skies with high cirrus clouds and contrails. breezy. Still a couple small patches of snow lingers on the ground from earlier snowfall this month. 32°.
12/18/2018 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T M Very sunny with mostly cirrus clouds, and cirro stratus clouds to the east. 34° and chilly. Soil moisture appears normal. One last little patch of snow remains on the ground that has not melted from early December snowfall.
12/19/2018 7:40 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T M Mostly cloudy with low and middle stratus clouds. I also saw possibly cirrocumulus clouds in one area: very pretty white and bubble-like. 35° and not too chilly feeling. Patch of snow from early December is still on the ground, but getting smaller day by day this week.
12/20/2018 7:25 AM 0.03 0.0 0.00 T M In addition to the measurable three hundredths (.03) inch of rain inside the rain gauge, there was considerable moisture in the form of drops of rain on the outside of the gauge and inside the rain funnel. Overcast, damp, but not currently raining. Grassy areas, ground, and cement are all wet. 42°, and feels damp and chilly. The small patch of snow from early December hangs on, but melted some more yesterday.
12/21/2018 8:05 AM 0.01 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Hearing a forecast yesterday for possible snow-rain overnight, I emptied .01 of an inch of rain from the rain gauge last night, and removed the inner tube and funnel. I found a very minute amount of snow (trace) in the snow gauge this morning. Overcast and 32°. Feels chilly. Snow patch on the ground is finally gone from snow that fell in early December.
12/22/2018 7:25 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast. 27°. Soil is starting to dry out.
12/23/2018 7:40 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast. About 30°.
12/24/2018 7:05 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Mostly clear skies, with a few low stratus clouds to the far east. About 22°. Full moon was glowing bright and high in the sky. A little chilly outside, but nice morning with hints of sunrise still lingering.
12/25/2018 7:00 AM 0.01 0.3 0.01 0.3 0.01 Overcast with some low, puffy clouds mixed in. 28°, but not too cold. No wind. Snow appears to have fallen evenly all over, with roads solid white, and grass sage colored and showing through the snow. Merry Christmas, Weather Scientists!!
12/26/2018 7:40 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Snow gauge is empty and dry inside, but has condensation on the outside of the gauge. All snow from yesterday morning was melted by the afternoon. Partly sunny with low clouds to east and a few to the north with a few wide contrails. 33° with no wind. Feels nice outside.
12/27/2018 7:30 AM 0.01 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Central cement areas are wet, but cement areas under overhangs are dry. 40°. Very overcast with a gray, thick blanket of cloud cover. Feels relatively warm out with no breeze.
12/28/2018 7:00 AM 0.50 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast skies. 42° and chilly.
12/29/2018 8:00 AM 0.07 0.4 0.07 0.4 0.07 Mostly cloudy. 21° and cold. Snow formed a pretty, white blanket upon the grass and dirt areas, with a hint of green accenting the white cover. Some cement areas are coated in white, and cement areas close to the house are speckled in white designs of very small snowflakes forming flake colonies (best description I can muster).
12/30/2018 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.3 0.03 Sunny with low stratus clouds in the distance to the north. The sliver of moon shines high in the sky. 20° and very cold with light breezes. Visual evidence of the snow melting, despite being below freezing over the last 24 hours: less snow on cement areas, and more grass is showing through the snow.
12/31/2018 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Snow gauge was empty, and precipitation (rain and freezing rain) that was forecasted has not yet started.. I did not measure existing snow and SWE, because the snow depth was so variable. Snow had completely melted on the southern elevations. Snow levels varied in other areas: from similar levels as yesterday on the north side (i.e. not much melting) to bare areas on some easternmost and west areas and freckled grass peeping through the snow in other areas. Snow on cement patio was reduced to a small circular area. I would have had to take 8 to 10 measurements in different areas to get an accurate average depth and resultant SWE. Cloudy. 35°, and feels relatively warm and comfortable. Happy New Year's Eve, dedicated scientists!
1/1/2019 7:45 AM 0.53 0.3 M 0.3 M Overcast. 25°, and not too uncomfortable. No wind. I measured .33 inches of rain through yesterday mid-afternoon, and emptied the snow gauge. This morning, the snow gauge had an additional .2 inches of ice water equivalent: precipitation in gauge was a frozen, clear circle of ice. Cement patio has thick layer of ice. Snow on grass and dirt is also a frozen crunchy, and hard to capture a complete SWE sample in the gauge. Happy New Year to all!!
1/2/2019 8:15 AM T T M M M The snow gauge contained a small cluster of very small snow granules at the bottom to one side. Overcast. 26°.
1/3/2019 6:35 AM 0.02 M M 0.3 0.02 Snow inside the snow gauge measured .02 of an inch SWE. I measured current snow depth on the ground at .25 of an inch, but there was ice underneath the snow. Ground depth SWE was also .02 of an inch. I did not measure new snow on the ground, because the flat surface that collected new snow was mostly frozen. Clear skies with the sunrise coming up over the horizon from the east. 24° and a little chilly. I did not feel wind.
1/4/2019 7:40 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Sunny and 34°. Most snow has gone away, except for areas shaded by structures.
1/5/2019 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Slight condensation on top outside of rain gauge. Clear skies, with a low contrail to the north, and a low golden blue purple hue of sunrise to the east. 33° and a little chilly. Only a smattering of snow remains in a few areas. There are icy patches on the roads and one on the cement patio. Slight frost on the ground in a few areas.
1/6/2019 7:10 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Snow and rain gauge were dry inside, but frozen condensation covered both the inside and outside of the rain funnel. The outside of the snow gauge was coated with wet condensation. A nearly clear frost rested on grassy areas, and grass was frozen. Some cement areas were wet, but other cement areas were dry as a bone. 30° and chilly. Clear skies to north and west. The sunrise cast a red ceiling under the stratus clouds to the east. There were also stratocumulus clouds to the northeast, with a long contrail that cut through those clouds. There were about three stray cumulus clouds to the east that were very small and isolated: they looked like little sail boats sitting in the clear area of the sky. Happy Sunday!
1/7/2019 7:20 AM 0.13 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Raining softly, and windy. Everything is very wet. Overcast and gloomy out. 39°, but feels chilly.
1/8/2019 6:30 AM 0.73 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Dark and overcast. Windy and 37°.
1/9/2019 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast with sunlight showing through the clouds to the east. 18°. Cold and breezy. All surfaces are dry. Windy throughout yesterday, but very windy through the night with some high gusts...I'm guessing 30 to 40 MPH gusts during the night.
1/10/2019 7:50 AM T T M 0.0 0.00 I observed brief snow flurries yesterday around 10:00 AM for about 15 to 20 minutes. Flakes were very small granule-like. Snow gauge was completely dry this morning. 16° and chilly. No wind. Mostly cloudy with what appears as widespread stratus, altostratus, and maybe some cirrus clouds. Some clearing to the north exposed some high cirrus and lower stratus clouds and revealed a fresh wide contrail made of small puffy clouds. A litle sky showed through. Clearing to the west opened up some blue sky areas among the alto stratus clouds. Low stratus and dark clouds to the east and south. There was a very skinny funnel-like greay cloud on its side (horizontal) to the south that penetrated the low clouds, thus, showing only about two-thirds of the funnel cloud against low grey clouds. Low clouds were grayest to the east.
1/11/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast with what appears to be stratocumulus and altocumulus clouds. 23° with a very light breeze: feels chilly.
1/12/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast with some dark clouds. 33° with very light breezes. I heard a hidden bird chirp a few times.
1/13/2019 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast with lingering crimson from the sunrise coloring some clouds. Clouds were moving from the east to west. 30°. A little breezy, and chilly without my coat.
1/14/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast with some clouds moving from southwest to east. 27° with a light breeze from the west.
1/15/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast. 28°, but does not feel that cold. No wind.
1/16/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Mostly cloudy with alto or low cumulus clouds. The clouds are puffy and colored with a bright light goldish grey hue. No wind, and does not feel like the 30° it is.
1/17/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast with a continuous grey blanket everywhere. 30°.
1/18/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Mostly sunny. 23°. Cirrus and a few stratus clouds to the west and a few to the north. Low puffy darker (cumulus?) clouds to the south and east. No wind, but chilly out today.
1/19/2019 8:30 AM 0.30 6.2 0.75 6.2 0.75 Snow in the snow gauge totaled 3/10 inch SWE. Blowing snow created drifting in every direction, with much more drifting next to structures. 19° and cold. Although not snowing at the time of my observations, it snowed very small flakes as I was defrosting the surface snow for snow water equivalent. The flat, wood, painted AC cover I use for surface snow was affected by drifting and blowing snow. Although I found a place that visually appeared to be free of drifting snow (a grassy area facing south), the SWE for the surface snow was .75 inch. Either the blowing snow prevented some snow to fall in the snow gauge, or there was drifting in the area of my sample. Since winds were predicted to be 15-20 MPH last night, I am guessing some snow blew over the snow gauge, and was prevented from settling in it. I conclude the 6.1875 (6 and 3/16th) inches received last night was fairly accurate. There were drifts up to 1 to 2 feet. It is now (an hour after I began observations) snowing lightly, and winds are still blowing snow off roofs and surfaces.
1/20/2019 8:00 AM 0.01 0.5 0.13 6.7 M There was significant drifting and blowing snow throughout the morning and afternoon yesterday with additional light lake effect snow. This morning it is sunny with mostly deep blue skies, except for low gray cumulus clouds to the east (over Lake Michigan, I am guessing). 5° and very cold. No wind.
1/21/2019 7:45 AM 0.04 0.1 0.02 6.8 M Mostly cloudy with gray stratacumulus clouds to the west, and a slight clearing to the north. Completely overcast to the east and south. 7° and very cold.
1/22/2019 7:30 AM T 0.2 M M M Despite the lake effect snow that fell yesterday morning, there was only a very small amount of snow (trace of SWE) in the snow gauge, and I observed no additional accumulation on the flat A/C board. However, my husband reported he removed about a quarter inch of light, puffy snow from the driveway and walks. This morning, it is now mostly cloudy and breezy. 22°. There appears to be low stratus and stratacumulus clouds with some high cirrus clouds and disturbed contrails. The sunrise presents a golden hue through the eastern clouds. Clouds are moving southeast.
1/23/2019 7:30 AM 0.37 3.6 0.53 M M Snowing profusely. Overcast and 23°. Wind is lightly blowing snow from rooftops. It appears snow on the ground has a greater water content than snow in the snow gauge. Snow on raised surfaces (garbage containers, stairs, and A/C cover) measured about 2.5 inches. Snow on ground measured between 3 7/16th inched and 3.75 inches.
1/24/2019 7:35 AM 0.08 1.8 0.22 9.5 M Mostly overcast in all directions at 8:00 AM. However, at 7:35, there were what appeared to be cirrocumulus and altostratus and lower stratus clouds to the east and southeast. The sun was shining brightly in the east. 10° and cold. I measured an additional 1.75 inches of new snow, giving my area a total snowfall from the last storm 5.35 inches of snow. However, the airport (about 2 miles away) measured 6.1 inches, so I cannot vouch for my accuracy on the newer snow that fell after yesterday's observation. Heavy snow feel for about three hours after yesterday's observation. I found what appeared an untouched area (free of snowblowing, shoveling, drifts, etc.) to measure existing snow.
1/25/2019 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 0.00 M M Lake effect snow fell for short spurts yesterday morning and again in the afternoon. This morning, low stratus and altostratus clouds linger to the east, and overcast thick clouds cover the northern sky. A little sky shows through from the south. The red-golden sun is rising in the east, and the moon, waxing gibbous, is clearly visible in the west. It is minus 5°, and breezy cold. There was no new snow accumulation on the ground. However, the windy night drifted snow across previously cleared driveways and walks. A big branch blew off the Little Leaf Linden tree on the eastern elevation. Too darn cold to take additional measurements. Stay warm, meteorologists, hydrologists, climatologists, and you other hard working men and women.
1/26/2019 7:15 AM T 0.0 0.00 M M There was nothing inside the snow gauge, but distinct frozen snowflakes scattered from top to bottom of the outside of the gauge. No new snow accumulation on the ground. Mostly sunny skies with a few low stratus clouds to the east and south and high cirrus clouds to the west. Minus 8° with no detectable wind.
1/27/2019 7:00 AM 0.02 0.1 0.02 6.4 1.05 A little snow fell yesterday totaling .125 of an inch. Sunny skies. Minus 3°. Moon visible toward east and waning crescent. No detectable wind, but very cold. (I took core depth SWE today, because I anticipate a snowstorm occurring during tomorrow's observation.)
1/28/2019 7:30 AM 0.76 6.9 0.93 M M Overcast and 26°. Snow is light and fluffy, and does not appear to have been significantly effected by wind. Feels nice outside. No snow falling at this time. UPDATE at 9:50 AM: freezing rain and snow is now falling, and began shortly after 9:00 AM. Now 28°.
1/29/2019 7:00 AM 0.05 1.0 M 14.4 M Freezing rain began about 9:00 AM yesterday, and light additional snow fell throughout the morning and afternoon. This morning, low dark smokey looking clouds stand to the west and north, with a little less of the same type of clouds to the east. Clear skies to the south, with the moon waning crescent high in the sky. Looks clear above the low smokey looking clouds (stratacumulus?). 3°. (Measured new snow accumulation in two areas yesterday after observation before snow blowing to get an average of .9 inch additional snow on the ground, and .01 SWE in gauge. Added today's observation of additional snow on the ground equaling .125 inch and SWE in snow gauge of .04 equals total .05 inch SWE in snow gauge, and an additional .125 inch of snow on the ground. Total snow accumulation from Sunday/Monday storm is 7.9 inches. 6.5 inches before storm, plus the 7.9 inches new snow equals 14.4 inches of total snow on ground. I did not perform a measurement of ground accumulation today with a ruler, as last night's wind and yesterday's snow clearing operations in all directions eliminated a trusted area for accurately measuring snow.)
2/1/2019 7:50 AM 0.01 0.1 T M M Overcast. 8°. (I did not venture outside the last two days to avoid the extreme cold. Therefore, snow in the gauge may have included anything that fell over Wednesday and Thursday, as well. However, I did not observe any falling snow on those two days.) There was a light dusting of snow that fell early this morning.
2/2/2019 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Overcast. 31°. Salt is now working on the pavements, and salted areas are defrosting, but no detectable snow melting in unsalted areas yet.
2/3/2019 6:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Considerable melting going on. Paved roads, driveways, and walkways are completely clear, but wet. 41°. It is still dark and hard to tell, but it appears to be overcast. Feels very comfortable outside, and no wnd detected.
2/4/2019 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 0.00 M M The outer rain/snow gauge was covered with wet condensation, and there was .01 inch water inside the rain gauge. There was fog last night. Mostly overcast with what appears to be stratocumulus, altocumulus, and maybe cirrocumulus clouds. Small patches of blue show through, and pink streaks from the sunrise add to the sky's beauty. 44° and a little breezy. Snow is continuing to melt, and has decreased by at least half of what it was. Sunrise progressed to a golden hue below the clouds. I heard a black capped chickadee in the distance: the first bird sound I've heard in a while.
2/5/2019 7:45 AM 0.08 0.0 0.00 M M It rained yesterday morning. Rain gauge contained solid ice this morning that melted down to .08 inch. Overcast and 26°. There is a slight amount of blue sky showing in the distant east. Feels pretty nice outside. I detected no wind. Snow was reduced by more melting yesterday, and it appears about three-quarters of the snow is now gone. Large ground areas are now free of snow, and most hard pavements are clean. No ponding or puddles detected in my area.
2/6/2019 7:30 AM 0.53 M M M M Light snow fell yesterday afternoon after a bout of freezing rain. This morning, snow gauge was covered with ice on the outside, and a round disc of ice floated inside the gauge with water surrounding it about a quarter inch all around and underneath ice disc. Overcast. 34°. Loud drizzle is falling. Very surreal listening to the crackling sound of precipitation hitting the frozen hard surfaces, but not really feeling the rain on my body. A little breezy, but feels comfortable outside. Surface areas are covered with ice, but can be walked on due to thin, crusty, nearly clear snow/soft ice layer on top.
2/7/2019 7:00 AM 0.20 M M M M Overcast. 34°. All surfaces are covered with freezing rain, including the outside of the snow gauge. Precipitation inside the gauge was all water. No precipitation was falling at this morning's observation time.
2/8/2019 7:30 AM 0.32 M M M M It rained yesterday, and very high winds prevailed throughout the night. This morning, the rain gauge had two thick lines of ice on the outside of it: each about 1/8th of an inch thick. One line was about four inches down from the top, and was about 2.5 inches long. The other line was about three inches from the bottom, and about three inches long. There was a solid disc of ice inside the gauge equaling .32 inch of water. There was a part of a blade of grass inside the gauge, so perhaps some water was blown into the gauge. Yesterday's melting snow and ice created many puddles of water of different sizes on the ground. There was a large pool of water on the ground (guessing two feet in diameter and about three inches deep) that was about two feet away from the rain gauge (gauge is 54" above the ground). It is also possible yesterday's high winds prevented some rain from entering the gauge. It is still breezy outside and 4°. Very cold with wind chill minus 15°. Mostly sunny with low scattered clouds.
2/9/2019 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Mostly sunny. There are a few thin streaks of high cirrus clouds in the sky, and low gray cumulus clouds to the east over the lake. 5° and chilly. No wind. Still quite a bit of snow on the ground, and melted liquid is ice on hard surfaces. Although there are a few small areas where the grass is bare, most grassy areas are still snow covered. Snow depths vary in many areas from 2 to 8 inches, with mounds and drifts higher. Snow is covered with a smooth, glass-like sheen of ice.
2/10/2019 7:55 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Overcast. 27°. Feels not too cold out. It looks like there was a little more melting of snow yesterday from the sunshine: a few more areas of grass were observed.
2/11/2019 8:00 AM 0.08 0.6 0.08 M M It snowed from mid-afternoon to mid-evening yesterday, beginning with large flakes. This morning, it is overcast. Breezy. Cold. 28°.
2/12/2019 7:50 AM 0.77 7.1 M 9.0 M It began snowing in the mid-evening yesterday. I observed quite a bit of heavy blowing and some snowing at around 3:30 this morning. There appears to be significant drifting in several places, but more on the eastern elevation of my property. This morning at this observation time, I took two measurements: one to the northwest; and one to the west (from a flat, painted A/C cover surface that I cleared after yesterday's snow). The NW measurement showed 6.25 inches of snow, while the W measurement showed 8 inches of snow. Thus, average of the two illustrates 7.125 inches of fallen snow so far. It is still profusely snowing, and snow is currently falling straight down. Flakes are medium size. Snow is heavy, but also fluffs when you kick it. 32°.
2/13/2019 6:45 AM 0.21 M M M M Overcast and windy. Cold. 19°. I observed considerable drifting yesterday in all directions, and snow clearing operations dumped snow in areas I had cleared at yesterday's observation. Thus, I am unable to obtain an accurate measurement of additional snow on the ground. The airport reported 8.2 inches of total snowfall during the entire event, and we usually receive a little more than the airport (which is about 3 miles away). I am going to guess we received another 1.9 inches of snow after yesterday's observation time based on yesterday's SWE ratio of .77 inches of water to 7.1 inches of snow. Since the temperature remained relatively steady throughout the last 36 hours (with similar highs and lows) and the ratio of the SWE to actual measured snowfall from yesterday's observation (.77 to 7.1) was.1085 (i.e., .1085 inch SWE per inch of snow), my guess of additional snowfall from yesterday's observation to today's is 1.9 inches: derived from .21 additional SWE / .1085 = 1.9 inches, for total accumulation of 9 inches of snow for the entire event, which lasted from Monday evening through Tuesday evening.
2/14/2019 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast with what appears as low moisture rich clouds. 31° with no wind. Feels relatively nice out. Hints of the sunrise still linger in the east with slight streaks of pink and gold. The bottom of the sun shines under the clouds. Low clouds to the NNW appear slightly yellowish. Birds are chirping.
2/15/2019 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Sunny. 8°. Slightly breezy. No clouds in sight. Small icicles formed on corner of roof below W valley. Some snow melted yesterday in the 40° temps. Ice formed overnight in areas where liquid remained. Extremely windy throughout the night and this morning.
2/16/2019 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Sunny skies with some high cirrus cloud streaks and contrails. One contrail was especially wide and swirly above our house. There were low dark gray clouds on the horizon to the north, south, and east. The sky was clear to the west. Brisk and 13° with no wind. A few birds were chirping.
2/17/2019 6:10 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Dark.
2/18/2019 7:30 AM 0.30 7.4 0.62 M M Snow has ended. Partly sunny, with the sun fully shining and some blue skies. Low stratus clouds; small puffy clouds to the south; and a few cirrus clouds. 18° and windy. Very cold. I measured SWE in the snow gauge using the scale method for a result of .285 inch. Then, I melted the snow inside the gauge, and observed the result of a hair less than .30. So, I feel confident using the scale method. The measurement of accumulated snow on the ground was taken in two measurements from two different places, and averaged to get the result of 7.4 inches. Both areas measured nearly the same: 7.4375 inches and 7.2985 inches for an average of 7.368 inches. The SWE from the 7.4375 inches sample using the scale method was .6169. Actual melted SWE from the ground sample .62 inch. Given the ground SWE is twice as high as the gauge SWE, I am guessing blowing snow may have effected one or the other sample. Significant blowing of snow was observed yesterday. Final note: Having looked at the 6.5 inches that fell at the airport; and observing over time that we receive a little more snow than the airport (we are about three miles due west of the airport) my final guess is that blowing snow prevented some snow from landing inside the snow gauge.
2/19/2019 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Clearing in the north with high upper winds blowing clouds toward the east. 14°. Mostly cirrus clouds with a few contrails. Alto stratus clouds and stratocumulus clouds. Does not feel too uncomfortable outside. (Snow clearing and drifting snow eliminated my go to areas for measuring total snow on ground.)
2/20/2019 7:45 AM 0.03 0.5 0.05 M M Not snowing at time of observation. 31°. A little snow blowing off the roof. Overcast.
2/21/2019 8:00 AM 0.19 M M M M Yesterday, it snowed; then, warmed up enough to melt icicles. Snow adjacent to cement sidewalks melted a lot of water onto the cement, and then refroze later in the afternoon. Ice formed on the tree limbs, and afternoon wind blew the ice tubes off the limbs, thus, creating shoveled piles of weird 1-inch long tubes of clear ice that hit us and the sidewalks as we shoveled. There was some bouts of freezing rain, as well. This morning, the rain gauge contained a solid disk of ice. Sunny, 23°, and breezy.
2/22/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Mostly sunny. 23°. Chilly. Altostratus clouds in all directions, but thickest to the east, and more to south and west. Less to the north.
2/23/2019 7:30 AM T M M M M There was more moisture on outside of the gauge than inside. Overcast with a mist in the air. 34°. Cement areas are starting to get slippery.
2/26/2019 7:45 AM T M M M M The snow gauge contained a very small amount of light snow at the bottom. Overcast. Light wind. 13°.
2/27/2019 7:30 AM 0.09 0.3 0.10 M M Several bouts of lake effect snow fell yesterday morning and afternoon. There is evidence of freezing rain: the outside of the snow gauge was covered with bumpy ice, and the light snow that fell yesterday was crusted on top. Overcast. 25°. Biting cold.
2/28/2019 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Although a few snowflakes fell in the late morning yesterday, the snow gauge was completely dry this morning. The sun melted clean the cleared cement surfaces yesterday. This morning, it is mostly overcast with a few contrails. Some sun is bleeding through the clouds: mostly to the east. Chilly. 12°. I observed a morning dove on the utility wire, and heard a cardinal's machine-gun rapid motion call.
3/1/2019 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Overcast. 23°. Does not feel too bad outside, and I detected no wind. Mourning Dove was on the utility line, and I heard several birds chirping in the distance.
3/2/2019 7:30 AM 0.07 1.5 0.06 M M Snow was very fluffy and light. Some areas were slippery underneath the snow. Sunny. Clouds to the south and east, and clouds are clearing to the west and north. 26°. Very light wind. Not too cold. The snow appears to have ended.
3/3/2019 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Partly sunny. Stratus clouds to the north northwest, and altostratus clouds to the west. Gray low clouds to the east. 15° with light winds.
3/4/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Sunny with clear skies. Some wind. Minus 6°.
3/5/2019 7:30 AM 0.02 0.3 0.04 M M I was surprised to see snow had fallen, because I had not heard it in the previous day's forecast. I measured snow on the ground in a couple places where I saw no evidence of blowing or drifting: a quarter of an inch fell (2.5 inches), thus, rounded to the nearest 10th is .3. The snow in the snow gauge was too light to measure on the scale, so I melted it in the traditional manner to get the SWE recorded above. There was some blowing of snow, as evidenced by some patches of clear cement. Perhaps some wind during the snowfall did not allow a full sample of falling snow to be captured by the snow gauge. The snow on the ground was light and fluffy. However, the ground snow core sample formed a perfect white disk at the top and inside the gauge and fell intact to the bottom. This leads me to believe that there was enough moisture in the ground sample to hold it together. The core sample measured 6 grams on the scale (.0298 SWE), however, when I melted the core sample, SWE measured .04. Sunny. 7°. Biting cold with light breezes. Low grayish clouds to the east, and puffy, white cumulus clouds in the other directions surrounded by blue sky. I observed two snow geese: each flying one at a time over my house northward. It was a treat, because I have only seen them once years ago flying over the Horicon Marsh in Mid-October. To see them now gives me hope. I am guessing they anticipate spring as much as we do. Glorious sight, because I never anticipated seeing them in the City of Milwaukee migrating back up north.
3/6/2019 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny with mostly clear skies. There were a few low stratus clouds to the far east over the lake. 7°. Very light breeze. Very cold out there. Snow on cement surfaces appears to have mostly blown away or melted and evaporated.
3/7/2019 7:10 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny. 15°. Light breezes. Cirrostratus clouds with contrails.
3/8/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Overcast. 27°. No wind. Heard the birds, including cardinals, chirping.
3/9/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M The snow gauge was dry inside, but covered with frozen condensation from top to bottom and all around the outside of the gauge. Yesterday's snow melt froze to ice overnight where water flowed on the cement patio. Low blanket of white-with hint of blue clouds cover the sky in all directions. Some aqua blue sky shows through to the south. 32° with no wind. Feels relatively nice out. I will place the rain gauge tube inside the snow gauge, along with the funnel on top, as the forecast for today's predicted 1-inch precipitation is anticipated to be all rain.
3/10/2019 7:20 AM 0.72 M M M M I forgot to add the inner tube to the snow gauge yesterday, so the SWE reflects what was found in the snow gauge. Overcast. 35°. Thin ice in spots on patio are covered with white crystals. Feels great outside. No wind.
3/11/2019 7:25 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Overcast with clearing low to the horizon to the east and north. Some red hues could be seen on the horizon from the sunrise. 25°. No wind. Ice formed from melted snow, and some very small and skinny icicles reformed from roof.
3/12/2019 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 M M Frozen condensation coated the outside of the top funnel on the rain gauge. Clear skies with a hint of golden sunrise near the horizon. 21° and cold. No wind. Thick ice formed on our patio and north walkway overnight from yesterday's melted snow which appears to have flowed from the higher level snow to the lower cleared cement areas.
3/13/2019 7:00 AM 0.20 0.0 0.00 M M Dark just before sunrise. Rain gauge was very wet on the outside, in addition to what was inside the gauge. Overcast. 40°. Rain has stopped for now. All surfaces on cement and buildings are very wet. Heavy rain fell around 4:00 AM. Feels really nice outside. No wind.
3/14/2019 7:00 AM 0.22 0.0 0.00 M M Overcast. Sunrise seemed unremarkable. 47°. Large puddles are on cement surfaces, and gardens are saturated and pooling with water. Snow is about half gone, and melting quickly. Feels like spring time out there. No detectable wind, and birds are chirping with enthusiasm.
3/15/2019 7:55 AM 0.20 0.0 0.00 M M Rain gauge is very wet. Overcast. 37°. Snow is about 75% gone. Grass and dirt areas are still wet and a little saturated. Large puddles on patio are gone, but cement surfaces are wet.
3/16/2019 7:30 AM 0.03 0.3 0.03 M M I did not anticipate temps to fall below freezing overnight, so I did not remove the inner rain tube. This morning, I found snow and ice in the top funnel, which, when melted, produced a SWE of .03 inch. The newly fallen snow on the ground measured a quarter of an inch (.25 inch), and the SWE of that core sample also measured .03 inch. Therefore, I feel confident the rain gauge was able to catch the snow in the funnel that would have otherwise fallen in the snow gauge. I will do a better job of checking temps to ensure the proper gauge is used.
3/20/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Reddish-gold sunrise beautifully reflected off divinely placed stratus clouds. There were also a couple high contrails. 37°. No wind. Spring will be here today at 5:58. It has been a ong, hard winter. Happy Spring!!
3/21/2019 7:55 AM 0.29 0.0 0.00 M M Overcast. 37°. Windy. Hard surfaces are damp. Dirt areas are muddy, but not saturated. There are no puddles or pooling of water. There is some mud on the patio near the house from, perhaps, moving water. There is one small, isolated spot of mud apart from the stream of mud on the patio step outside of the patio door that appears to have dropped down from above, but the house shows no sign of where it may have dripped from.

4/5/2019 7:30 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 There was very light rain on and off during the afternoon yesterday, and it was very cold outside: upper thirties. I found raindrops or condensation in the rain gauge top funnel this morning, but the inner tube of the rain gauge was dry. Knowing there was very light rain yesterday, and believing there was just not enough to populate the inner tube, I determined a trace of rain fell. This mornig, it is overcast and 39°.

4/9/2019 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M It was extremely windy last night from about 9:00 PM to 11:30 PM. This morning, the sky is sunny and blue. Not a cloud in sight. 49°. Birds are chirping.
4/10/2019 10:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M 0.0 M 38°. Rain and snow falling. Only liquid found in rain/snow gauge. I just now removed the funnel and inner tube, because 1 to 2 inches of snow is predicted later this afternoon.
4/11/2019 7:30 AM 0.28 1.9 0.27 1.9 0.27 Snow in snow gauge was mostly water with a chunk of slushy ice. Snow measured 7/8th inch on top of the A/C cover (flat wood painted surface about 3 feet above ground. I measured snow on the grass in two places, and both measured 1 and 7/8th inch. I took a core sample for SWE from one of these locations. The snow was hard and easy to measure. The ground core sample inside the snow gauge measured 6/8th of an inch, which I assumed became compressed/compacted when the core slid from the top to the bottom of the snow gauge. It is 35° out, but feels very cold: much colder than just above freezing. It is breezy, and cement surfaces are clear (although damp). Snow had accumulated on cement and road surfaces yesterday, but quickly melted by evening.

4/14/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast with low, gray stratus clouds. Windy. 35°. Birds are chirping. The rain gauge was empty and dry at my first observation. A couple minutes later, I decided to remove the funnel and inner tube, because there is a forecast for rain this morning and through the day today. I noted a bug the size of a flea now inside the inner tube. It was black and had an elongated body that thinned at the end. I don't think it was a flea, unless it was a different flea species.
4/15/2019 7:15 AM 0.20 4.0 0.40 4.0 0.40 It snowed all day yesterday, with several hours of heavy blowing snow. The snow gauge had snow packed on the outside of it on one side. The house had snow blown to it from top to bottom. I measured snow around my property in several areas, and found amounts from 2 to 6 inches. I averaged the measurements to arrive at 4 inches. I found two depth measures of 3.5 inches, so I took the SWE core sample from one of them. The difference between the ground measure of SWE and the SWE found in the snow gauge is, most likely, due to the intense blowing snow that fell but did not land in the gauge. 32°. The snow is somewhat heavy and crunchy on top. Very sunny and nice out. No detectable wind.
4/16/2019 7:45 AM 0.06 M M M M Nearly all snow has melted, except for small and medium size patches here and there where wind-driven snow was deeper. 99% of the snow is gone from my property. 4/28/2019 8:20 AM 0.13 2.5 0.13 2.5 0.13 Yesterday's snowstorm fell in a mixture of sudden bursts and long-lasting blowing snow which hampered visibility significantly. I measured the snow depth in six places this morning in a small area I hoped was free from the most wind, and also in the shade so as to be less impacted by the sun's quick melting. Three of the six measurements registered at 3 inches, while the other three measured out to 3.25, 3.5, and 3.75. Thus, the average snow depth was 3.5 inches, but I believe the solid snow rested above about an inch of grass. (Our landscaping company erroneously cut down the grass to one inch this past Thursday, believing our property was zoned commercial.) The core sample quickly collapsed in the snow gauge upon falling from top to bottom, thus, demonstrating the heavy high-moisture content of the snow. There was one very small fraction of a blade of grass in the core sample, so that is why I do not believe the snow dropped past the grass to the dirt. The snow lays on the grass in a puffy-like blanket: low and high spots alternating very close together. Cement areas, walkways, and streets are all clear of snow and nearly dry. It is sunny out and 40°. Clouds above are mostly cirrus wisps, with lower bright white shallow altocumulus clouds. The lone bloomed daffodil still looks good. Birds are chirping.

8/27/2019 7:00 AM 1.74 M M M M Bouts of heavy rain yesterday. This morning, Sunny. 61°. Top funnel on rain gauge coated with condensation.
8/28/2019 7:00 AM T M M M M 59°. Sunny, with some chem trails and a few high wispy (cirrus?) clouds. Feels chilly out for the first time in a long time.
8/29/2019 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny. 54°. Slight amount of condensation on rain gauge top funnel.
8/30/2019 7:07 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 55°. Mostly cloudy. Clouds are lighter colored, and sun shines through. Feels a little chilly and fall is in the air.
8/31/2019 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Condensation on rain gauge funnel. Subdued sunniness with light streaks of clouds. 56°.
9/1/2019 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 62°. Cloudy. Light sprinkle of rain is starting.
9/2/2019 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There was very light rain yesterday morning into the early afternoon. However, apparently there was not enough rain to accumulate in the rain gauge, as it was empty and dry this morning. Currently, it is 63° and partly cloudy. Heard crickets chirping. There is a slight amount of condensation on the rain funnel. Feels nice out...not cold or chilly.
9/3/2019 7:00 AM 0.29 M M M M Thunderstorm occurred earlier this morning. 68°. Damp and very light rain occurring now. Sky is overcast with some white clearing clouds and other clouds are grey and cumulus. Storm blew amaranthus early splendor plant (which stood straight up previous to storm) in northern direction. We hope it will stand straight up again after it dries out.
9/4/2019 7:55 AM 0.07 M M M M 61°. Mostly cloudy. Heard the loud squabbling of and saw the first 5 or 6 migrating geese overhead in their characteristic V pattern.
9/5/2019 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 62°. Sunny. Feels slightly warm for only 62°. There was a slight amount of condensation on the rain gauge still left over from the early morning. A cricket was resting on our patio screen door. After taking a picture of it, I gently flicked it, and it hopped to the patio, where it rested. Then, a few minutes later started to make its way back toward the patio screen.

9/12/2019 7:30 AM 1.64 M M M M 63°. Cloudy. Upon going outside to collect the rain gauge for measuring, I observed the cement surfaces were still wet from the recent rain, but the air was dry (it had stopped raining). However, when I went outside again to place the rain gauge back in its bracket (about two minutes later) I observed the air was misty, with some small palpable raindrops. Yesterday's rain began heavy at about 5:00 PM and remained heavy for the most part for the next couple hours. It continued to rain until well after I went to bed (about 10:30 PM). It was no longer raining when I awoke this morning at about 7:00 AM.
9/13/2019 7:30 AM 2.64 M M M M 69°. Cloudy. Very heavy rain fell last night and overnight. Much lightning and thunder.
9/14/2019 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 57°. Sunny. Sky is blue and cloudless. There was .01 inch of water in the inner tube of the rain gauge, and the entire rain gauge (funnel and outer gauge) was covered with condensation. I checked the precipitation statistics at weather.gov (https://w1.weather.gov/data/obhistory/KMKE.html) and found no report of rain at the airport. (I live 3.3 miles from the airport). I, then, checked the precipitation reports of my fellow Milwaukee County CoCoRaHS participants, and found only two reported: both reporting zero. Although the airport is some distance away from me, and the two reporters live even further from me, I feel confident no rain fell in my area after yesterday's observation. Thus, the .01 water in my rain gauge this morning was, most likely, the result of trickling down condensation from the funnel.
9/15/2019 8:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 67°. Overcast. Crickets chirping in a slow steady manner.
9/16/2019 7:50 AM 0.02 M M M M 64°. Cloudy.
9/17/2019 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 60°. Overcast. Fog. No condensation on rain gauge. Crickets were chirping. This summer has presented many more flies and crickets than usual. We have not seen many mosquitoes this year, Thank God.
9/18/2019 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny with some light wispy and bubble clouds. 63°. Heavy, dripping condensation on the rain gauge; siding of the house, etc.
9/20/2019 6:10 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There was a very light sprinkling of rain in the 5:00 PM hour yesterday that was just enough to show some raindrops on the patio. This morning, I saw no water in the rain gauge. There was light condensation coating the outside of the rain gauge funnel. 62°. Pink sky to the east just before sunrise. A few stratus clouds.
9/21/2019 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 70°. Partly cloudy. Feels a little humid.

2/24/2019 2/25/2019 7:00 AM 2 0.71 M M Yesterday was extremely windy from the evening of February 23rd; throughout the entire 24-hour period of February 24th; and still some wind early this morning, February 25th. Winds were sustained from 25-35 MPH, and gusted up to 63 MPH. My husband said it was snowing early yesterday morning. It rained heavily on Friday, February 23rd throughout the day and evening after the February 23rd morning observation. This morning, it is sunny with clear skies in all directions. No wind. 5°.

3/26/2019 3/31/2019 7:30 AM 6 1.10 0.0 0.00 I found .12 inches of ice in the rain gauge this morning, which melted down to an SWE of .11. There was a small chunck of dirt in the bottom of the gauge. There was a lot of wind on Friday and Saturday (March 29 and 30). Yesterday was dry, so my guess is rain fell on Friday or Saturday.
