This snow came in with a strong wind, so the gauge probably didn't catch all the moisture. New snow is what I measured at 7:00, I don't know how much melted. I think it is also low. It is muddy and soft underfoot. |

This came in with strong wind on occasion, and some drifting. The ground is warm, so the snow is melting on the bottom with the top very light and fluffy. The gauge missed some of the moisture, maybe about a third of what came down. |

We had snow that melted, then some rain, then snow with a wind. The gauge probably didn't catch all the snow, but a fair portion of what came down melted or came down as rain. I don't think a core sample would yield much more than what was in the gauge. |

The ground is still mostly snow covered, but there was a lot of evaporation/melting when the sun came out yesterday. The top inch of soil is saturated, but the ground is frozen below that inch. The result is lots of small puddles of water where the water cannot get through the frozen ground. |

The wind was 20-30 mph for a large portion of this storm, so the gauge probably caught less than half the moisture. The new snow is a guess. I shoveled a clear spot that wasn't drifting much, and used that as a gauge for new snow. I have a spot that over the years has proved to the closest to the average snow for the whole area. That is where I took the total snow measurement and the core sample. The wind in this storm was more out of due north than usual, so the spot might not be as good as normal. Also, yesterday, we had a lot of rain before the snow started, so the core sample is probably missing up to a quarter of an inch that was in rain. |

The core sample is from 200 yards south of the rain gauge in our front pasture. This point was between sage brush drifts and at a point that was about the average depth of snow that wasn't enhanced by a drift. I think it is representative of the water content of the rangeland near the house. I don't know how much of this storm came down as rain, certainly a large amount (up to a quarter inch maybe), and there has been melting into the ground and wind movement on the top of the snow. There is also about a one inch crust on top of the snow. |

This core sample was taken about 200 yards south of the rain gauge. It is out in our front pasture in an area away from the drifts near the sagebrush. It is probably representative of the moisture content of the rangelands surrounding the house. The amount of moisture in the core sample is the total of 0.98 and 0.32. I originally reported 1.32, but the real total is 1.30. |

This started with rain before it turned to snow. The wind was 10-20 mph for most of the time, so the gauge probably only caught about half the moisture. The core sample was taken about 200 yards south of the rain gauge location in an open area away from drifts. It is conservative because it rained and the bottom of the snow is melting. This evening I discovered I had entered an incorrect amount for the snow we had, it was 5 inches rather than 4 inches. |

With the 10-15 mph wind, the rain gauge probably missed at least a tenth of an inch. The snow measurement is not very accurate. The snow is held up by the grass blades, and it has melted near the ground. On some boards, it was 2 inches, which is probably a better gauge of what actually fell. But it is all an estimate even though I am quoting actual measurements. |

Some of the snow came in with a 10 + mph wind, but most of it came down with only a little wind. I would guess the gauge missed about 0.05 of an inch. About a third of the moisture came down as rain. The snow measurements were from 4 to 10 inches, but my guess is 6 inches. My wife thinks I am measuring too much of the grass height. Anyway, take the 6 inches with a grain of salt. |
